I work at a library, and saw a magazine “US”, with an interesting cover article. It was about Katie Holmes, and her marriage to Tom Cruise, and about Scientology. From what little I know about Scientology, it sounds too much like a brainwashing cult, and I fear for Katie’s soul, since she was raised Catholic.

I was wondering what Scientology was all about that lured her in? Why is it so seductive and cliquish? I was glad Nicole Kidman left Tom, (and I hope she returned to the Church). I’m still really befuddled about the whole thing, and normally I could care less about celebrities, but I really fear for Katie and Suri. I’d be glad for other people’s two cents worth.

How many people hold to a Creed or belief - or vote for a political candidate - because the dominant spouse in a marriage does?

Scientologists believe that everone is born with various psychological hang-ups, which can be “cleared” by the movement’s courses, and then members are able to achieve life goals.

They are not entirely wrong. We believe much the same thing. Where we differ is in the emphasis, which is not on personal fulfillment but on the service of God.

Film stars live a very pressurised life. They don’t have secure work, and they have to compete not only with their technical acting ability, but also with physical appearance and lifestyles. Then they are always in the public eye. So it is easy to see why they would find a movement like Scientology attractive.

I think i can remember her remarrying in an Australian Catholic Church.I assume she must have married Tom Cruise in a Registry Office and that was why she was able to divorce him and then get married again
 
I think the core belief of Scientology is that aliens (or maybe alien spirits) were brought to earth millions of years ago, and some master alien dude named “Xenu” put all these alien souls in a volcano and blew them up. And so it comes to pass that, inside each one of us, are many hundreds or thousands of these restless alien “Thetan” spirits, generally making mischief and acting out. So by practice of scientology you can learn to subdue the warring alien spirits and live a better life. Learning this involves taking various classes that you pay money for to get different levels of certification, etc.

Sounds pretty appealing, doesn’t it. I can see why people would go for it.

You mean engrams through auditing…

I do not see why a “religion” that is based on space aliens to be considered attractive. Personally, I am attracted with the secular religion of transhumanism.
 
Also another core belief is that you have to donate lots of $$$$ to be a member…
 
I can’t give you any specifics about what Scientology teaches, but I’ll share my personal experience with that cult. Some 30 years ago when I was in college (and before I became a Catholic), I was engaged to a young man who was raised Presbyterian. He took up with the Scientologists and it was scary. It sounded weird and creepy to me, but not being one to just dismiss something without exploring it a bit, I did some reading. My conclusion was that Scientology was basically a combination of new-age thought and popular psychology, packaged to make a large profit. I wanted nothing to do with it, and eventually nothing more to do with him as he became sucked in more and more, so I broke up with him. But they already had my name, and I didn’t get free from their mailings, etc. until I moved to a different city and left no forwarding address. Thanks be to God they didn’t have cell phones and email back then! Finally my ex-bf decided that he wanted to quit Scientology, and he had an even harder time getting rid of them because he had been heavily involved – they made his life a living hell for awhile, pestering him and pressuring him to come back. The last I knew, he had moved to the east coast and was safely back with the Presbyterians.
 
I cant imagine why people turn to Scientology. Its got nothing to do with Science anyway. Science fiction is not Science.

But, people do turn to it. So, what does this say about our witness in the world? Maybe we all ought to take our individual gifts and talents to witness in the ways we can, either by example, outreach, whatever the method more seriously.

Of course most importantly we must pray. Do we have any apologetics for this at Catholic Answers? Are there any former members that are here?

We need to know the ways to approach them if we meet a member of that cult.
 
we were all made to seek God. it’s just that these folks found it in the wrong place, and honestly, i can understand why they accept it although i personally think the idea of aliens in us is quite crazy.

we must pray for them!
 
I don’t see where Christ is mentioned in scientology…am I missing something!!!:confused:

Yes, Nicole Kidman came back to the Catholic Church. Her marriage to Keith Urban is sacramental. 🙂 👍

From what I’ve heard (and correct me if I’m wrong), the CC doesn’t recognize Scientology marriages to be valid (although they’re still legal), so Kidman wasn’t validly married to Tom Cruise (which is why her marriage to Tom Cruise wasn’t an impediment to her marrying Keith Urban in the Church), and Katie Holmes isn’t validly married to Cruise either.
 
This cult uses scare tactics against anyone who dares to speak out against them. And, from what I have heard, an underground in the community who work on their behalf without being publically identified as Scientologists.

Have we had any Scientologists posting here?

As goofy as this whole “faith” sounds, we should still be searching for answers to give them if we meet them!

This is after all, Catholic Answers Fourms!

Come on people! Lets figure out how to battle this heresy!

Not waste time puffing ourselves up knowing they are following something that is based on a man who wrote mediocre sci fi.

Lets get equipped! Battle calls!

The latter is excellent in telling what not to say to a Scientologist, as well as helpful tips on how to help.

What we reallyneed to do is educate ourselves and then educate those around us, families, friends & co-workers, so there will be fewer people ignorant of what Scientology is really all about.
