I know Scotland has descended into oblivion religiously, but it is a country that is still close to my heart in a way. There were definitely some interesting Catholic characters to come out of Scotland. Anyways, I have been wanting to find any fiction that is spiritual in nature around Scotland. Very hard to find. I picked up a book called “Be Near Me” by Andrew O’Hagan about a Catholic priest so I thought I would check it out. It starts out great, then it becomes clear the priest is a repressed homosexual and then has a drug episode with a young boy that descends further and I stopped there. Anyways, can anybody recommend anything? I know about Sir Walter Scott and George MacDonald, but I am trying not to go the Presbyterian route. Thanks.

I don’t have any personal knowledge of any of their writings but the Wikipedia’s article, “List of Catholic Authors,” identifies George MacKay Brown, Dame Muriel Spark, and Bruce Marshall as Scottish Catholics. They might be worth checking out.

Sorry, can’t help.

I did go to your blog. Interesting the Primates meeting was your last article. That was what finally gave me the freedom to leave the Anglican Communion for the Catholic Church.

Thanks be to God! Welcome home! Did you join a Latin Parish, or did you join the Ordinariate?

Our Fathers, also by Andrew O’Hagan, is better. Potentially, The Fanatic by James Robertson, one of my all time favorite authors, although that’s a rough approximation of what you’re looking for (it is both modern and Scottish Reformation era, and focuses more on the reformers). Also, don’t write Scotland off in terms of religion! I lived there for four years (2012-2016) and there is still an great Catholic presence, especially in Glasgow.
