Our diocese has a relationship with the local scouting councils - I don’t know a lot about it, because my eldest daughter isn’t quite five yet, but here is what the Diocese of Sacramento website has to say:
“The Roman Catholic Church has used the Scouting program since the early days of the Boys Scouts of America. There are more than 330,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers in more than 9,600 packs, troops, and crews under Catholic auspices, and an equal number of youth members in other Scouting units. Scouting is used in about one-third of the parishes in the United States and approved by our Bishop of Sacramento, Jaime Soto.”
Apparently the Sacramento diocese has also assigned a Catholic chaplain to provide assistance to the troops in our area. When I contacted the Girl Scout council in my area for my daughter, I was told I had the option to select a troop affiliated with the Catholic church…
As an aside, my husband is a former Mormon and was a boy scout. He says they never sold anything when he was a boy in Utah. He was surprised to see the cookies, etc. when he moved out here. Also - the title is 10%. As a little boy, he had the task of going door to door to collect the money from his neighbors. He said all of the boys had a route. Kind of a “tithe route” as opposed to a paper route.
