Screaming Babies at Mass

refer to previous post by me to someone else today . Also Jesus performed mass with his apostles without disruption from children .
By this logic then, no women should attend Mass either, because the Apostle’s were all men. 🤷

I find this thread very disturbing, and I don’t even have children!
Children belong at Mass with their families.
I will concede that there are some parents who may be "clueless’ but I do not think that is the norm. Most, I believe, are just trying to do the right thing and bringing children to Mass will, indeed, help them to learn how to behave in Mass.

For those of you who think children should never be at Mass until they know how to behave, do you think that Joseph & Mary did not bring Jesus to Temple when He was a baby so that He wouldn’t disturb the services?

One of the most heart-breaking episodes I ever had at Mass was watching a young mother with a severely handicapped child cope with the needs of the child during Mass. She had a companion helper with her, and while there was little noise, there was certainly some distraction. Much of my prayer at that Mass and at some since has been to ask God to strengthen her and hers through this ordeal. What was so disheartening was to have her companion turn to me after Mass and apologise for their presence. I tried to assure her that I thought they were just where they needed to be, but I don’t think she heard me. Now if I see someone like that near me at church, I make it a point to go over and say something to them afterward. Maybe the parents of these young disruptive babies need that also. You cannot know if that baby is suffering from colic, or some disorder which causes high-pitched cries, but if so, the parents really need the comfort of the Mass or they would not have made the effort to be there. What we can know/believe is that everyone has some burden and needs to be at Mass and the encouragement of the community.

Defender 1, if children are too difficult for you, perhaps you do need to find a different Mass time. Our early Mass is less populated by children and maybe that is true in your Parish also. You might also speak with your pastor about which is the quietest Mass. We all have different needs at different times, and your distress is evident 🙂
A different mass time ? seriously? I am a Eucharist minister and needed at times to be a a certain mass . On top of that their are selfish and prideful parents at every mass , at a congregation of 10,000 its kind of hard to miss them .

We have the same problem in our church, these little ones scream so loud, we can’t even hear the priest. We had one such family who had three little ones that continuesly disrupted the mass so bad, the priest actually had to stop talking and gave the couple a dirty look before the mother took the kids out in the hallway, and we could still hear them. Unreal! Happy to say these people have left our church because every one was so disgusted with this family, some one left them a message. Now they attend a church across town which is associated with our parish, and they are having the same problem with these people and they are not too happy about it. I’m not saying children should’nt be brought to mass, but only after they are taught what mass all about. We have a nun who wasn’t aloud to go to mass until she was seven years old.

I gave up on this one. People, some, can’t distinguish between a baby who is making a little noise and one who is very disturbing to everyone who is serious about hearing the liturgy. To me it seems easy to understand the difference but I found out that it is a distinction that some cannot make. Movin’ on…😛

So apparently according to you my son with Down syndrome will never be able to attend Mass then. My son is 5 yrs old and still cannot say my name, let alone grasp what it means to be quiet and still when in the presence of the Eucharist. This thread has gotten really disturbing and makes me thankful for the family friendly parish I attend. Peace
Your child has down syndrome and it ranges from high IQ to very low IQ . I happen to have a number of clients with down syndrome . If he is severely mentally disabled with an IQ of under 30 , then he may not know about being quiet but if his IQ is high enough he will .And if its not what is wrong with the quiet room ?

Group E to Group A - There is nothing wrong with the cry room. The problem is Group B
Oh, my mistake, you are Group B!

Mary and a number of woman were present of the coming of the holy spirit in ACts . SO your logic is faulty there . They belong at mass but a a place where they cannot disrupt the priest while he is doing GOds work .

The other night I was trying to sleep when a car alarm from a distance kept going off , I could not get sleep no matter how hard I tried . Just as when your in mass trying to concentrate on the homily or the consecration and a child is making disturbing noises or even crying . No matter how serious one is its gonna get to them

Yes, but the first MASS was the Last Supper.
That is when Jesus instituted the priesthood also,
and they were only men there, therefore, only men can be priests!

So, no, my logic is not faulty!😛

Clearly there needs to be an adult cry room, as is evident by this thread.

For all the whining sniveling people who think the Mass revolves around them!

Remember dear friends, the Mass is where the Christian **community **comes together to worship. And sometimes not everyone in the community behaves the way *you *think they should.

Maybe the car had a problem you didn’t know about. 😉

You have also missed the point…congratulations…for the most nonsensical post here.

I am getting a bit distressed by this thread. There seem to be several things going on:

Group A-The thread was initiated by someone very upset by crying babies in church and the failure of parents to remove them as a distraction. This poster was supported by others having the same issue, and adding in toddlers and other children who misbehave in one way or another. The focus seems to be get them out of church and get them under control. In addition, all churches should have a cry room to avoid distressing the rest of the congregation.

Group B: Another group of posters seem angry with group A for having difficulty with the noise of young cheldren at Mass and blame the parent for not correcting their children and characterize the parents as entitled, prideful, or simply uncaring.

Group C: This group of posters are offering some insights as to the various conditions which might make kids “misbehave” and parents delay in making them stop. This group is asking for some understanding and tolerance at the least, and less judgementalism at best. Some of these people seem angry at groups A and B.

Group D: joins with group C in offering explanation and pleas for less judgementalism, but trying also to empathize with groups A and B.

The level of vitriol is rising in this discussion. Lets all try to have a little charity. I am close to reporting this thread to the mods because it is getting to be a bit vicious. This is my last post. on this thread. LIST]
Well, you are close. However, the thread was initiated by someone from your Group B not Group A. I would also add a Group E which included some individuals who offered some suggestions of what could be done- in a charitable way. I think this thread has run it’s course and is ending in the same viciousness as it was started. I’m with you- I’m done here, too.
I have to agree with all of this. I think the main problem is how some express themselves with the written word and then also how some are interpreting and understanding each others’ thoughts on the subject matter. It’s one misunderstanding piling upon another misunderstanding until it becomes this whole other beast. The scene is manifesting itself into something quite nasty and when that occurs it becomes very difficult for people to truly keep themselves open in the discussion. It is then the natural reaction for people to go on the defense and become poised for negativity and insults. In this thread, at least, I think most of the people here are actually in agreement with each other, but the negative energy that has permeated the thread has gotten too strong of a hold.

It is time for me to unsubscribe from this thread as well. I’ve been keeping myself open and calm, but some of the vitriol I’ve been reading is becoming disturbing and perplexing.

It’s interesting how some posters respond to ideas while others skirt the issue and emotionally react to the person. That’s partly why I don’t enjoy discussions about practical solutions to ethical problems. Someone says “That’s wrong” and he gets dogpiled with “You’re not nice”. Always the tyranny of “nice”.
