What does it mean if you see someone being effected by church services to where they seem to become unwell and growl, yelling out stop, and gnashing their teeth like the prayers of the church or Mass are tormenting them?

I know people react to exorcism prayers or demons react etc but the Mass or other church services arent exorcisms are they? Or could a possesed person react to normal church prayers and hymns also?

Hi Paul,

I am certainly no expert–or anything like that–but if I saw anything like that going on around me, I would think that the person might be showing signs of a possible possession, and that would be something that a priest would have to determine.

I would personally think that if someone were possessed, anything of a holy nature might set them off–being around holy objects in a church too–the blessed objects that surround us in a church if you think about, the holy water in the church, the crucifix in the church, the prayers recited during Mass, the presence of the priest, the presence of the host, etc.

Parishioners surrounding the possessed person could be wearing blessed sacramentals too, like medals, crosses, and scapulars–all different kinds of things could be going on there to make that person uncomfortable if they were possessed, in my opinion.

I experienced something like this once in daily mass. A man entered the church and during the Eucharistic prayers, began to scream and curse. Every time Jesus was mentioned, in the prayers, he would get down on his knees- clearly against his will! He would scream, “I refuse to kneel before you” while he was kneeling! He growled and blasphemed, and ultimately was taken out of the church by police- and no doubt carried to the hospital. Mental illness? Possession? I have NO idea…but it was frightening to watch. I occasionally include this poor soul in my prayers as I have no idea what ultimately happened to him. I would urge you, as well, to pray for the person who is disrupting your mass. The most powerful thing we can offer, as lay members, is prayer.

It seems I’ve heard from sources I trusted, that the Mass contains an exorcism. I don’t remember what part of it; maybe someone else knows?

The person sounds mentally sick or possessed by Satan.
Could be either, or both.

I’ve only seen something like this just once. We have a homeless guy here who is mentally ill. He would do things like spit repeatedly in front of the Blessed Sacrament! He’d go from church to church doing things like that. He vomited one time.

I haven’t seen him scream, though.

He once struck a pose, outside of church, like how you see the demons in paintings. It was really strange. He’d also do stuff like take off his clothes. I have not seen that, exactly, but I’ve been told and believe it.

I once saw the police escorting him out of the market.

My first suspicion would be they are seeking to be the center of attention. Escort them outside and tell them to stop with the drama. I have seen people get all frantic, “pass out”, and act a fool like this, and most the time it is nonsense and attention seeking behavior.

As for an actual possession, they need to be seen by a priest via the families request. No one should deal with it. Many times this is related to a psychological issue more than anything else. I have to say if I was a priest and this happened at the Mass while I was officiating I would tell the person, right from the altar, to stop acting so silly and to grow up.

I really have little tolerance for this nonsense.

Ok thanks for your thoughts,i guess this kind of thing happens in many places out there.
Someone told me the brain of a person suffering from possession or evil can or does become inbalanced, therefore they usually need medical help as well as the spiritual.

Maybe these people have their own torments and personal demons in their life deep down, then when they come into contact with God and the church,it all comes out,as only God can reach into our inner most being and self.

True,it can seem like attention seeking, but God has the power to touch everyone inside, and if one be tormented, it may come out even if the person tries not to react or want to make a scene, anyhow Lord have mercy on all suffering like this.
