From the C.S. Lewis masterpiece, “The Screwtape Letters.”

Screwtape is the uncle of Wormwood, and teaches him how to be a more effective devil. The “Enemy” in this letter, is of course God.

“On the other hand we do want, and want very much, to make men treat Christianity as a means; preferably, of course, as a means to their own advancement, but, failing that, as a means to anything-even to social justice. The thing to do is to get a man at first to value social justice as a thing which the Enemy demands, and then work him on to the stage at which he values Christianity because it may produce social justice.”

To discover how this works follow the money trail from socialist, anti Catholic and very progressive groups through the CCHD and other liberal politicians- who claim to be Catholic- in the name of Social Justice.

I am going to copy and paste this quote on my facebook profile. Have you read Kreeft’s Snakebite Letters?

He uses the same format and adds some current issues. He’s not CS Lewis but it’s good.

Gee, based upon the lack of response in this forum no one wants to debate Lewis and/or you have hit a nerve.

What’s to debate? Lewis hit the nail right on the head, as usual.

Of course you have all considered the founding father’s line regarding the inadequacy of the constitution for the governing of an immoral and non-religious populace. Were not the founders using Christianity as a means to ensure social justice/harmony while they dealt with other matters in the constitution?

This book is phenomenal 👍 as is its ‘sequel.’ It’s suprising how little it is spoken of!!!

I suspect you are thinking of “Screwtape proposes a Toast”. If so, not a book, per se, but a 20 page “speech”.

A miracle of synchronicity - I just finished reading it for the umpteenth time last night!

I noticed a slight theological flaw. Screwtape states or implies that angels (fallen or not) can read human minds. I do not think this is so.👍

No, it’s that other one… Just looked it up, it’s the Great Divorce. The nun (I think a nun ) over at the Catholic bookstore referred to it as sort of a sequel, even though it’s a thousand percent different!

This book is equally as good 🙂 Less concrete details, but every time you might get worried about the powers of hell it helps to imagine hell as it is in this book.

It’s in no sense a sequel. But it’s a great read.

Hi all,
May I draw your attention to a website : www.alive.ie.
Its the site of a free newspaper here in Ireland. On the back page of the paper is a column called ‘The Dumbag Letters’.
Its inspired by C.S. Lewis’ work and concerns a dialogue between a senior tempter and a junior tempter.
Happy reading!
God Bless,
Colmcille1.🙂

back in Lewis day, social justice related to commies, not proLife, anti-gay marriage, etc., I think historical context matters.

Unfortunately, the term social justice has been coopted to the point where unless it is specifically defined, it is useless in regular conversation.

There are proponents of legalized abortion and homosexual “marriage” who claim that these are a part of social justice.

Thanks! I appreciate that…saves me some time trying to find it.

You are very welcome. I have a knee-jerk reaction when I see a quote from folks like Lewis and Chesterton, to source it, from my collections.
