The Gospel is not a history lesson, its meant to lay out a situation in which we can find ourselves?

God can speak to us directly and specifically through the reading of scripture, if that’s what you mean.

During the homily the focus on the readings is: “What does the text say?”. It is not supposed to be a 45-60 minute Bible study nor full of all the amazing imaginable interpretations the preacher could think of. An ordinary homily in the Catholic Church has several references to what the early Church fathers, saints and doctors of the Church taught and is between 3 sentences to 15-20 minutes.

The Gospels are histories, of course. They are the true history of salvation.

If you do not think that history of even a mundane sort can be applicable to your life, I guess the historical side of the Gospels would not seem applicable either.
