if all the protestant churches believe in scripture alone why is it that they don’t agreed in the interpretation of scriptures and become one church
Somethings are agreed upon protestants i.e. Christ is God and died for our sins and rose again. Other things there are differences of opinion.if all the protestant churches believe in scripture alone why is it that they don’t agreed in the interpretation of scriptures and become one church
The first agreement is debatable and frankly so are the second and third. There are some Protestants who deny all three of these things. So your statement should read, “there are some protestants who agree on some things”Somethings are agreed upon protestants i.e. Christ is God and died for our sins and rose again.
You will need to expand on this. Differences of opinion? Do you mean by this that they are no big deal to disagree on? I don’t understand? Who decides what is just a “difference of opinion” and what is actually a drastic turn from Christian belief?Other things there are differences of opinion.
There are some non Catholic christians that do not believe in the diety of Jesus Christ, Can you name something else you all have in common? other than protest the Catholic church’s teachings.Somethings are agreed upon protestants i.e. Christ is God and died for our sins and rose again. No different than what you find in the catholic church on a number of issues.
Are you saying that all members of the Roman Catholic church accept and believe in the diety of Christ? ALL MEMBERS on the official books believe the same thing? There are some non Catholic christians that do not believe in the diety of Jesus Christ, Can you name something else you all have in common? other than protest the Catholic church’s teachings.
Well they cant be Catholic if they dont. Are you saying that all members of the Roman Catholic church accept and believe in the diety of Christ? ALL MEMBERS on the official books believe the same thing?
But they are on the rolls of the Catholic Church? They are members? To be “in good standing” again, they would simply need to repent and seek confession…are they not still considered members of the more than one billion members of the Roman Catholic church?Well they cant be Catholic if they dont.
If they are baptized validly in the eyes of the church, they are Catholic. No one can take that honor from them, not even themselves, they have the indeluable mark of God on their soul. Only they can consider themselves as non practicing Catholics, and if they teach and or believe heretically, they can be excommunicated unless they repent, and return to the full communion of the body of Jesus Christ. But they are on the rolls of the Catholic Church? They are members? To be “in good standing” again, they would simply need to repent and seek confession…are they not still considered members of the more than one billion members of the Roman Catholic church?
And “who” doesn’t consider them Roman Catholic any more?

What protestant group do you know that denies these things?Somethings are agreed upon protestants i.e. Christ is God and died for our sins and rose again.

True protestants who hold to Sola Scriptura would not.So your statement should read, “there are some protestants who agree on some things”

All orthodox protestants believe in baptism as essential. There are differences when and whom it should be done. For example some do infant baptism while others only do adult baptismss.Roman_Catholic

To deny that Christ is God and died for our sins would be a “drastic turn from Christian belief”.Roman_Catholic
and what is actually a drastic turn from Christian belief?
God bless you
Thats a close one, but when you say only by what christ has done? makes me think of a few protestants that believe in confession of sins. So no, can you try again?Would you happen to have the name of this denomination?
Sure Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons
Christ died for our sins and rose again and forgiveness of sins is possible only by what Christ has done.
Non-denominational. A friend of mine said he denied the Trinity because it is not in the Bible and was nothing but a Catholic invention. In fact he went so far as to say that those Protestants who still believe it are still too lost in Catholicism to realize it.What protestant group do you know that denies these things?
Orthodox Protestant, I just had to write that myself because it seemed so strange when I read it. Anyways, how come they came to different opinions on when to administer baptism? Shouldn’t they be in agreement with each other if they go to the Bible alone? All orthodox protestants believe in baptism as essential. There are differences when and whom it should be done. Who’s church? Yours? And what happened to scripture alone? I know of some Protestants who would have gasped at your idea of “taking it to the church.”The leadership in the church would decide.
What about communion? Baptism? The end days? Are these things ok to disagree on?To deny that Christ is God and died for our sins would be a “drastic turn from Christian belief”
If you know the name of his church it would help to determine where he is coming from. He almost sounds a Jehovah Witness which if he is one is not protestant. Could also be a oneness pentacostal.Roman_Catholic;3366362]

Some thing that infant baptism can be gleaned from the scriptures while others would say it can’t and a person must first believe and repent befiore being baptized.Quote:justasking4

That would be great but there are many factors that cause this. One is that we don’t have enough info on some passages to know with certainity. This is not much different than what you see in the catholic church on various beliefs. Just look at church history and you will find that the catholic church has believed different things at different times. And this is happens with supposedly infallible interpreter.Shouldn’t they be in agreement with each other if they go to the Bible alone?

In some cases yes. In others it would derive from what was believed in previous times as in the reformation.Roman_Catholic;

let me begin to answer this with a question…if all the protestant churches believe in scripture alone why is it that they don’t agreed in the interpretation of scriptures and become one church
We don’t all believe in scripture alone.if all the protestant churches believe in scripture alone …
**The reformation was way after St. Augustine, this quote is for Catholics not Protestants and Catholics regarding the essentials verses the non essentials, For the Catholic belief is only one Church believing in one Lord, one faith, one baptism. I believe today my christianity belief is the same as ST. Augustines, what you think to be different is cultural and language, but both interpreted the same belief, **mormons and jehovah’s witnesses are not Christian therefore do not fall under the umbrella of protestant.
They may not be Protestant in the formal title, but their founders come from protestant backgrounds, besides they consider themselves christian. Ask them?
oneness pentacostals believe in the deity of Christ (they just believe that it is ONLY Christ so i would put them on the fence of Christianity, but the statement that ALL protestants believe in the deity of Christ would still hold true).
now to address another issue:
let me begin to answer this with a question…
if all the catholics believe the exact same things, why are there a number of different rites within the church. why don’t they all worship the same way?
**All Catholics worship the same way in the Eucharist this does not change. A rite in the Catholic church, you have to be more specific, because a rite has to be approved by the Pope in order to be Catholic, and Just because a rite is different in language or cultural does not make them believing differently. **
augustine said, “in essentials, unity. in non-essentials, charity.” now we all (including catholics) might have different things we would put in the categories of essential and non-essential… but there are some things that we do all agree on and i would say it is the essentials. i think many catholics on this forum focus way too much on non-essentials, thinking them essential.
wow, retract the claws a little.**The reformation was way after St. Augustine, this quote is for Catholics not Protestants and Catholics regarding the essentials verses the non essentials, For the Catholic belief is only one Church believing in one Lord, one faith, one baptism. Do you believe in the same Christianity that ST. Augustine did? Then why Quote this Catholic theologian to try and balance your protestantism with an author who never even heard of your branch of christian faith. During his life time there was only one christianity in the world, and that was Catholic.
Understood. We know in truth though that not all Roman Catholics…those on the rolls of the church…hold to all the doctrines of the church…in like manner…just because one attends a Protestant church or is on the rolls of a Protestant church, one does not necessarily believe the “essentials” most Protestants hold to.If they are baptized validly in the eyes of the church, they are Catholic. No one can take that honor from them, not even themselves, they have the indeluable mark of God on their soul. Only they can consider themselves as non practicing Catholics, and if they teach and or believe heretically, they can be excommunicated unless they repent, and return to the full communion of the body of Jesus Christ.
To be Roman Catholic, you hold to the teachings of Jesus and his apostles, you hold to the vicar (Prime minister to the king) of Jesus Christ on earth, Peter and his successor, Your authority lies with the Pope and Catholic bishops. these all hold to the same doctrinal beliefs as Roman Catholics.
**Sorry bengal, I reread my post I didnt think I came across to you that way, still dont. So I am sorry if that is what I portrayed to you, was not intentional.wow, retract the claws a little.
the quote is for Christians. augustine was addressing the numerous controversies of the day. many wanted to deem others as heretics when it was really non-essentials to augustine. the only times augustine attacked people as heretics was in relation to the divinity of Christ, the nature of salvation (which the church does not hold to augustine’s view as a whole), and the nature of the church (augustine went back and forth on this one throughout his life in many ways).
your Christian faith is most likely not that of augustine’s. read him and you will see that.
well, i think you need to read your history a little better. there was not only the RCC in augustine’s day. there were already small “splits” within Christianity. i am not trying to justify anything and yes, i do disagree with augustine on some things… none of which do i consider essential and i doubt he would either (based on his writings).
i think you need to calm down a bit and realize that you do not have a market on the truth.
i maintain that augustine’s quote is just as valid (if not more valid) today within the wide spectrum of Christianity.
Do you think all protestants would believe in the inspiration of Scripture? We don’t all believe in scripture alone.
