Manny and Tome,

I appreciate your answers but for the sake of my original question “If Mary didn’t remain a virgin after the birth of Jesus, how would that lessen her?”, let’s assume that she made no vow and that your church never taught such a doctrine. I don’t wish to make this a doctrinal debate over such a simple question.

So, “If Mary didn’t remain a virgin after the birth of Jesus, how would that lessen her?”
Let me post what I previous said:

**According to our tradition, Mary was consecrated to the Lord. The Protoevangelium of James records that when Mary’s birth was prophesied, her mother, St. Anne, vowed that she would devote the child to the service of the Lord, as Samuel had been by his mother (1 Sam. 1:11). Mary would thus serve the Lord at the Temple, as women had for centuries (1 Sam. 2:22), and as Anna the prophetess did at the time of Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:36–37). A life of continual, devoted service to the Lord at the Temple meant that Mary would not be able to live the ordinary life of a child-rearing mother. Rather, she was vowed to a life of perpetual virginity.

If she *did not *remain a virgin, Mary would be breaking her vow of celibacy to God. She would have to offer sacrifice to the Temple to atone for her breaking the vows to God. **

Then let’s go at the what if situation. What if our Church never taught she was a consecrated virgin, or taken a vow. Well, she would have a normal marriage life and have other children. This would not lessen her as a person.

Thanks Manny.

Thanks Manny.
Your welcome. Of course you know, our tradition holds that Mary was a consecrated virgin to the temple, and remain a virgin. This is affirmed by the Early Church Fathers. I’m glad to answer your question.

***Hi, Manny!

…but isn’t this much like the homosexual arguement (…we just want to have equality and not be discriminated against…) and the Christmas argument (…well there’s no birth record so how can it be Dec. 25…)? I suspect that Mary’s virginity is only the superficial argument–lying underneath is the contention that the Teachings of the Catholic Church are awry hence the need for the true “church/s” to arise and bring the truth to the world…

God Bless!

*Hi, Manny!

…but isn’t this much like the homosexual arguement (…we just want to have equality and not be discriminated against…)*

What gave you that conclusion? I am only answering to a question of an what if situation. If the Church had not taught that Mary remain a virgin, it wouldn’t lessen her as a person. Mary would still be viewed as the revered Mother of Jesus.

This has nothing to do with homosexual argument.

Pwrlftr,
First, I have to agree Manny that the Church’s doctrine of Mary’s Perpetual Virginity in no way reflects on a negative attitude towards marriage and motherhood. I am not implying that this is your thoughts, but sometimes in these discussion someone else, who happens to come into the discussion at a later time misunderstands some opinions being expressed so I want to make this point very clear. The Church hold’s the greatest respect and sees great dignity in the vocation of Motherhood. Again, I turn to the writings of Pope Benedict but I strongly suggest all read what you can of Pope John Paul II’s “Theology of theBody” to get a fuller understanding of what the Church’s teaching on the dignity of motherhood is.

In regards to Mary I find it impossible to try to discuss such a hypothethical question of what if the Church didn’t teach this doctrine and I am basing this reply on the Church’s understanding of Mary based on Tradition, yes, but also on Scripture itself.

No we may disagree on the Catholic interpertation of the scriptural passages that the Church bases her doctrinal teachings in regards to Mary, however, as a Protestant I think you would agree it should be impossible to try to attempt to discuss something that we believe the scriptures so clearly proclaims (I am not saying you agree but that you understand why the Church is compelled to teach what she does).

However, I think it should be pointed out, that the doctrines of Mary’s perpetual virginity are not based on the belief of some Church Fathers that Mary had taken a vow of perpetual virginity.
This is an example of a teaching that can be believed but is not necessary that we believe it - the part about the “Vow” not the doctrine of perpetual virginity.

I would also like to add one more reference from scripture that the Church uses in her belief in Mary’s virginity. This reference is from Lk 1: 46 - 55 - “The Canticle of Mary”. In the opening stanza of this canticle Mary proclaims that her Soul," Proclaims the greatness the greatness of the Lord…" I am using the NAB translation but I think other translations bring out, what I hope to say, even better. Magnify might be a better word but the point I want to make is from the Canticle Mary is proclaiming that her whole life is now given to God. She calls herself God’s “Handmaid” and that her true joy is in God’s service. This is why in the past some of our prayers poetically equate Mary to the Moon. The Moon’s light is not of its own making but reflects the light from the Sun - Mary’s life as she proclaims not is given to reflect, magnify - proclaim God not herself.

So I think using this gospel passage we can come to another reasonable conclusion why the Church teaches Mary’s perpetual Virginity. In her “Yes” her life was now given totally to God through her motherhood of Jesus the Incarnation. If this is so how could be distracted in her service to God the Father in her motherhood of the Son by having and raising other children?

Again, Pwrlftr, you may disagree with what I wrote or what the Church teaches but I hope you perceive that what is taught is not just from pious traditions, as opposed to the Apostolic Tradition, but has, as we see it, a strong scriptural foundation.

But to ask what if the Church didn’t teach this is like asking what if the Sun rose in the West and set in the East.

This has nothing to do with homosexual argument.

This is should be discuss in another thread not here.

Of course we know the reality of truth taught by the Magisterium based on Scripture and the writings of the Early Church Fathers, and Councils. That’s how we know Mary to have remain a virgin all her life.

If the Church have specificially taught that Mary wasn’t a virgin after the birth of Jesus. We would see it in the writings of the ECF, and Councils. We don’t see that.
***Hi, Manny!

…sorry for the confusion… sometimes I think of something and some how believe that others capture my mind’s machinations…

What I was attempting to convey is that had the Church not taught Mary’s perpetual virginity it could not be used as an argument… this argument, in my personal opinion, is much like the homosexual and Christmas arguments… there is a greater and deeper agenda (homosexuals will never cease till the Church acquiesces and blesses their “lifestyle;” and the argument against Dec. 25 being Jesus Christ’s birth date is not made in an effort to discover the actual date of His birth, but, rather, to eradicate our Lord’s incarnation–thusly annulling the Church and the Bible) which has as it’s main goal the annulment of the Church by proving that her Authority and Teachings are flawed.

Perhaps I should not have attempted to use these particular analogies… my sincere apologies if anyone has suffered any hurt feelings.

God Bless!

There is so much to be said concerning this topic and I am learning different approaches to this 2000 year old belief. I often wonder how I would even entertain the thought of having intercourse with my wife after whe just bore a Son whose Father is God. Jesus was conceived in such a way that I’d have to wonder how anyone could even fathom how Joseph could enter where God has been. ( See Ezekiel 44:1-3) Great (name removed by moderator)uts on this thread. As the OP I’d like to thank all who contributed and welcome any more comments…teachccd 🙂

***Hi, teachccd!

I have thought about Joseph… there’s so little about him in Scriptures that it seems as though he was just a bystander in a highway collision… yet, what little is spoken says volumes.

Depending on the version, the Bible tells us that Joseph was a just, upright or righteous man… the angel greets him as David’s descendant, which places him in that group of Isrealites who are fervently awaiting that promised Messiah, and just look at Joseph’s actions before and after the visit (dream) from the angel… he demonstrates an uncommon virtue, complete humility and total acceptance of God’s Will…

So why can we not think that Joseph would have understood the greatness of Jesus and controlled his carnal desires? If Paul could see this connection (serving God with all of his being) why could not also Joseph?

God Bless!

This to me has always been the perfect answer. I have often wondered how it could not be obvious to those who question or doubt; and indeed according to scripture.

For Joseph clearly came to believe and understand that his betrothed had been chosen by God as worthy to fullfill the promise of salvation and redemption made, awaited and anticipated since the fall of Adam and Eve.

Think of it! How many women had been born since Eve until **one **finally loved God so completely… was devoted so completely to God that in her entire life she chose to live and follow in The Way of God, always chosing that which was perfect and pleasing to God… to fulfilling His Will. The first human since creation to do so and along with her Son the only who have!

The Archangel of The Lord, Gabriel hailed and proclaimed her virtue reknown by the Lord Who was with her and the Heavenly Host; hailed and proclaimed her blessed among women; hailed and proclaimed her favour with God!

And that Joseph clearly believed and understood (as best as the human mind could comprehend) that this fullfilled promise of man’s salvation and redemption had come in a manner far more holy and glorious than any had ever imagined; that the child she bore was no mere child, that the child she bore was The Son of the Highest, The Son of God.

Joseph saw with his eyes and heard with his ears and knew in his heart, mind and soul the greatness and glory of his betrothed and wife, The All-Holy Virgin Mary; and her role in the course of mankind.
And Joseph saw with his eyes and heard with his ears and knew in his heart, mind and soul the greatness and glory of the child conceived and born in her womb and that, that child was indeed the result of The Holy Spirit having come upon her and the power of Highest having overshadowed her. Inexplicably, miraculously and immaculately, The Only-Begotten Son of God, The Word of God Incarnate became man. The infinite and uncontainable conceived and born in the womb of his betrothed and wife, that she was indeed The Theotokos-the Mother and Bearer of God;
The All-Holy Mary, Ever Virgin…virgin before conception, virgin in birth…Ever Virgin. Could he touch that? Never! A mere man enter into The Holy of Holies? Never.

Matthew 1:25 clearly states Jesus was the first born of Mary; what is also clear as written in Greek, yet seems lost in translation is that Joseph knew her not neither before nor after His birth.

Does a poor, partial or faulty understanding “make her lesser?”
Not at all, it does not change that which was and is.

But, what is made less is the fullness of knowledge and understanding of Truth… and opens the door to error, worst yet, falling under the deception of the Evil One and his minions who strive to keep us in darkness.

How beatulifully stated. It always amazes me how one cannot see Mary in the same light that God sees her. Many times non-Catholics will say that God chose all kinds of sinners to do His will and that is indeed true. But bringing forth the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity by “pouring” the eternal God into the womb of Mary could be given only to the person that you described in your post. Thank you and continue to say this to as many people as you can. Jesus smiles…🙂

***Hi, teachccd!

I believe that many refuse to comprehend exactly that; it was not just a renovation of an infertile old body to give it the ability to procreate… It was the pouring of God Himself into a vessel of His choosing… remember Moses’ experience with the burning bush? He was told by Yahweh to remove his sandles before continuing his ascent as the ground he was treading on was Holy… the ground, as the mountain, was much like any other in the world… with the exception that God Himself chose to make contact with it… Mary was just such ground–made Holy by the Divine!

God Bless!

This is perhaps the strangest thing about the Roman Catholic church; How you keep referring to Scripture as proof yet Scripture says just the opposite.

Christ did not honor his mother at all while on earth. He never called her ‘Mother,’ instead referring to her as ‘woman.’

You totally ignore Scripture when it explicitly states that Jesus had brothers and sisters and often mentions, James, the Lord’s brother.

It takes a great deal of faith, and false assumptions, in order to attempt to say that Mary remained a perpetual virgin; was ‘assumed’ into heaven and was sinless.

If we believe Scripture then we can not believe this. Christ says “all” have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. He didn’t exempt His mother. Even though there is no evidence he even thought of her as a mother. His treatment of her throughout the Bible certainly tells us that He had no special spot for her.

I believe Mary should hold a special place, being the mother of Jesus, but she is not the mother of God. Jesus was already God when Mary bore him. He did not have a mother. He always existed and will always exist.

Where are the Scriptures you keep referring to that show us about Mary? All I see are Old Testament verses that don’t even pertain to Mary at all but instead to a Temple of God.

This is just like Peter being the “rock.” The RCC assumes a great deal when it can’t be backed up with Scripture. The Scriptures never place Peter in Rome at all, nor do they ever say that Peter was higher than the other apostles in rank.

If Mary had been kept sinless, then we would not have to study the Bible so much to try and prove it. God would have made it very clear to us because He would have wanted us to know it; just as He would have wanted us to know about Peter. He wasn’t known to keep secrets in such matters.

You must open the eyes of your heart and of your head to see what Scripture has to say. First of all, you say and I quote,“Christ did not honor His mother at all while on earth.” Anyone who knows anything about Jesus knows that He was a faithful Jew. We are to imitate Him and one of the commandments given to us by God is to honor your mother and father. So what I hear you say is that Jesus broke one of the commandments. I was always taught that when a commandment is broken it results in sin. HHMMM…

Most Catholic and Protestant Scripture scholars alike understand that Jesus called His mother “woman” as a form of respect. It typologically refers to Mary as the second Eve (woman). You actually believe that Jesus dishonored His mother? You really believe that or are you trying so hard to distance yourself from the Catholic Church that you make such rediculous comments that most Protestants would disagree with. Certainly you would have to take Martin Luther to task for his belief that Mary is the Mother of God, remained sinless and a perpetual virgin. (He started the Protestant reformation fyi )

Paul said that “all have sinned” not Christ. And this cannot be taken at face value or else Jesus would have had to sin. He was fully human. God makes special exceptions and when the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and by the grace of God she became the Ark of the New Covenant she had to be as pure as the Ark of the Old Covenant. She carried the living Word of God.

How can you lower Christ by insisting that He is not worthy to be carried in an unstained womb? The Ark of the Covenant which carried the written Word of God was pure and untouchable but the womb that carried the living Word of God was stained with sin? I hold Christ to a much higher standard than that.

Then you run off to Peter. Take a breath, slow down and listen instead of attacking. You just might hear something that makes reasonable sense and someone who says that Jesus did not honor His mother is not one of them. I could not follow a Christ who is not the perfect role model of what giving honor to a mother portrays. He would never have asked John to take His mother if He did not care for her.

You make me embrace my Catholic faith even more. I could not imagine myself seeing Jesus the way that you do…God Bless and you are in my prayers…teachccd

What Bible are you referring to?? He mistreated His mother? I’m supposed to imitate this Christ of yours? The person of Jesus Christ is fully human while remaning fully God. Mary gave birth to one person with two natures. Jesus is God. Mary is His Mother. Mary is the Mother of the person of Jesus Christ. One person two natures. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God. The person of Jesus Christ is incarnate and was born of Mary. That person is the God-Man. Mary gave birth to the God-Man, Jesus. How many different ways can this be said? Mary did not give birth to just His humanity. That was a heresy snuffed out in the fourth century.

Jesus asks" Who do you say that I am?" My answer: The King of Kings deserving nothing less than the sinless Mother that you created for Yourself.

Oh my! Where to begin? And to what avail… This is perhaps the strangest thing about the referring to Scripture as proof yet mistranslating, misinterpreting and misrepresenting Scripture to say just the opposite…at the same time rejecting the Holy Apostolic Tradition that affirmed that which was Authentic and rejected that which was spurious and the product of false prophets…

Christ did not honor his mother at all while on earth. He never called her ‘Mother,’ instead referring to her as ‘woman.’
Think carefully about all the implications of such a statement, I am certain you did not intend to accuse Jesus of sin, breaking the commandment…“Honor thy father and thy mother.” Nor the Archangel Gabriel of lying, nor of God by whom the he was sent.

You totally ignore Scripture when it explicitly states that Jesus had brothers and sisters and often mentions, James, the Lord’s brother.
Not ignoring, my brother…merely keeping to the faithful Tradition and fullness of Truth.

Where are the Scriptures you keep referring to that show us about Mary? All I see are Old Testament verses that don’t even pertain to Mary at all but instead to a Temple of God.
So, Matthew 1:23 refers to…?

It takes a great deal of faith, and false assumptions, in order to attempt to say that Mary remained a perpetual virgin; was ‘assumed’ into heaven and was sinless.
If we believe Scripture then we can not believe this.
No, if we believe Holy Scripture, we must! Indeed, this is the very meaning of faith, accepting and believing beyond that which can be seen and proven in this earthly existence; attributing it to God, believing in it, expecting and having hope on it.

Christ says “all” have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
where is this exact quote to be found?

He didn’t exempt His mother.
You’re right in your assumption, he didn’t need to, she herself did that. God, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit affirmed and proclaimed it in word and in deed.

Even though there is no evidence he even thought of her as a mother.
???..This is not according to the evindence seen, heard and known for 2000 years…

His treatment of her throughout the Bible certainly tells us that He had no special spot for her.
Again, ???. Let’s examine His first miracle performed at the wedding feast in Cana, John 2:4, “Woman what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.” If it is only seen a rebuke, then how does it follow that He then turned water into wine?
In any event, it is certain that one day, whether in life or in death the Truth and proof of all this and more will be made known to all.
But, do you really think this kind of speculation and commentary “that he had no special spot for her” is pleasing to Christ?

I believe Mary should hold a special place, being the mother of Jesus, contradicting yourself?
but she is not the mother of God. Jesus was already God when Mary bore him. He did not have a mother. He always existed and will always exist.

Correct in that before His birth according to the flesh, He was begotten of The Father, with no mother. But, that only refers to the Divine Nature of Christ, The Word and Only-begotten Son of God. But that’s not the whole “picture”. Christ was also perfectly man, yes Divine in His Godhead -begotten of The Father; but also, in His loving-kindness and for our salvation became man, was born as a man of the Virgin Mary. But still One Christ, the child Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, the person of Christ who both Divine and Human…
Still One Christ, Divine and human at the same time, one person, one Christ.
Not one without the other, The Word was made flesh, born of the Virgin …without father in His humanity, without mother in His Divinity… are you beginning to see?

Although it may be difficult for mere man to comprehend the Mystery, when distinction is made to deny either Divinity or Humanity, it falls short of the mark.
