Is there any place in scripture that warns us or codemns interpretation of the Bible by unbelievers, i.e. muslims? I feel comnfortable with the amount of ammo at my disposal, but I’m looking for a Biblical reply to trump their spin on scripture.

Thanks.

I don’t think so. If there was, it would have been used to Death. Not only that, but you have to remember that interpretations vary from person to person. Words can be twisted in any way you want. And that’s a shot to both sides. :sad_yes:

No.

You will occasionally hear uninformed (or dishonest) apologists cite:
Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, (2 Peter:1:20)
That passage DOES NOT MEAN that we cannot personally interpret the Scriptures. It means that the Scriptures themselves are not a personal interpretation (but, rather, were inspired by God).

Non-Christians are free to read Christian Scriptures and interpret them in any way they please. But, of course, such interpretions are about as reliable as if I were to grab a few lines of the Koran and interpret them for myself (and it would be even more absurd if I tired to tell Muslims what they should believe based on my barely-informed ideas).

Lt Tony,

Maybe something of what you seek is in these scriptures.

“Have nothing to do with the pointless philosophical discussions and antagonistic beliefs of the ‘knowledge’ which is not knowledge at all; by adopting this, some have gone right away from the faith. Grace be with you.” [1 Timothy 6 20-21]

“The time is sure to come when, far from being content with sound teaching, people will be avid for the latest novelty and collect themselves a whole series of teachers according to their own tastes; and instead of listening to the truth, they will turn to myths.” [2 Timothy 3:3-5]

“You must keep to what you have been taught and know to be true." [2Timothy 3:14]

“All scripture is inspired by God and can profitably be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people’s lives and teaching them to be holy. This is how the man who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work.”(2 Timothy 3:16 - 17)

“A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but has to be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. He has to be gentle when he corrects people who dispute what he says, never forgetting that God may give them a change of mind so that they recognise the truth.” [2 Timothy 2:24-26]

I totally agree. I used to always avoid “verse slinging.” But with muslims totally misinformed spin on things, it has been difficult for me not to. I’d even settle for choice words of wisdom along these lines from extra-biblical sources, as long as the conform to catholic doctrine.

This has always been my attitude, too. But patience wears thin at times. I talk with muslims a lot at whyislam.org and islamfactor.org.

Thank you, trishie.
