Scripture mentioned in New Testament

I have a question: when Paul mentions “scripture” in his letters, does it refer to the Old testament? WHat about: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” 2 Tim. 3:15-17 I’ve heard people take this to be the whole Bible. Yes, the word scripture does mean the old testament. I did I quick search of the word and that seems to be the correct context of it. As in 2 Timothy I would take it to mean the old testament, but also true for the new.

Because we have the New Testament does not mean we should discard the Old Testament. We would never be able to understand the New Testament without the Old Testament. We also use the Old Testament at every Mass. Most of the time, the first reading is from the Old Testament. Even when it is not, we have a Psalm at every Mass.

In its historical context, Paul was speaking of the OT. Later, Peter in his letters refers to Paul’s wrintings as being scripture. Even later when the canon was compiled, the word scripture expanded to include what we call the NT.

We need the OT because it testifies about Jesus and is filled with prophecies about our saviour.

Also, the wisdom of proverbs is still vaild for today.

The original and literal meaning of Scripture is only the Old Testament Scriptures. They are still profitable for teaching, and such, BECAUSE THEY ARE THE WORDS OF GOD!!!

To us, today, the Scriptures that are profitable for teaching, and such, are BOTH the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Does that mean we are bound by the Laws detailed in Leviticus. No, because they represent the Mosaic Covenant. But the OT is much, MUCH MORE than the Mosaic Covenant. God is speaking to us today in those Scriptures just as much as He was speaking to the ancient Hebrews.

Another way to think of it:

You can’t just read, “The Return of the King” and get the entire story of “The Lord of the Rings”, can you? No, you need to read “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Two Towers” in order to get the message(s) being conveyed.

The OT is just as critical in getting the full message of the NT.

Paul was familiar with the Septuagint, as was Jesus and many of the apostles and disciples. In fact, the LXX is often quoted in the NT by Jesus and the writers of the NT.
