Does anyone know why Daniel 12:4 is so differently translated in the NAB and the RSV? The NAB translates that evil will increase while the RSV translates that knowledge will increase.

Hi Jack,

“Knowledge” is in the extent Hebrew texts and is used in the Vulgate. “Evil” is the reading of the Septuagint, which, in this case, some translators have deemed more representative of the original Hebrew text. My French Bible de Jérusalem uses “iniquity”.

Hi Jack,

Yes, the Douay-Rheims also uses “knowledge”.
Dan 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time appointed: many shall pass over, and knowledge shall be manifold.
Interestingly, there is no footnote in the NAB explaining why they chose to use “evil” from the Septuagint.
