Hi
I am fairly scrupulous and have a fear of blaspheming and I keep thinking I have ‘accidentally’ blasphemed. I have also been very worried at times about committing the unpardonable sin. But while at Mass Today, when saying prayers such as the Creed, I was constantly thinking things like ‘what if I blasphemed’ and I had horrible thoughts imagining me screaming out blasphemy’. This then lead to more blasphemous thoughts and I am always very worried about saying something blasphemous when praying because of the thoughts about blasphemy in my head.

I think I may have uttered something blasphemous under my breath about God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit, possibly several times. When I’m thinking blasphemous thoughts or thinking about blasphemy, I take a big deep breath out while thinking of a thought praising God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. So sometimes when I take the breath and have a bad thought, I think I may have said something bad.

I’m just worried that I said something blasphemous during Mass and then received Communion in a state of mortal sin. I have never wanted to blaspheme and have no intention of wanting to. I wasn’t certain that I had committed a mortal sin, so was it ok to receive Communion? I don’t even definitely know if I did, one of the rules for the scrupulous is to not receive Communion when there is no doubt that a mortal sin has been committed.

I’m worried, please help

I learned an easy “remedy” for disturbing thoughts. The moment they occur… say:

“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit… as it was in the beginning… is now, and ever shall be… world without end. Amen.”

If the disturbing thought persists… then you persist, in praying the “Glory Be”… until it stops. And it WILL stop.

Giving glory to God… especially in the midst of a disturbing thought… is the surest way of chasing the devil off. Try it. It works. God bless.

i have had scrupulosity problems and know some of the agony that went thru my head trying to" figure things out" on my own, it got unbearable, getting a good priest as a confessor to trust that God will work thru him to direct you will help. Also for me i subscribed to scrupulosity annoymous newsletter. you have already made the first steps to overcome the problem by admitting that you have the problem! As regards wondering if i have committed a mortal sin it helped me greatly to read the catechism ccc1857." For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must TOGETHER be met:Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter, which is also committed with full knowledge, and deliberate consent."
Which means that i cannot accidentally commit a mortal sin by definition. that gave me much clarity and comfort!
I will pray for you!👍

It is a good thing to fear offending God. It is a good thing to hate sin so much we would rather die than offend God who loves us. We can not offend God by imagining we have offended Him. We can offend God in our imaginations, but not by imaginary offenses. When we fear that we might commit a sin the thing to do is pray to God for His protection. Hide me in your wounds Jesus. A great saint prayed every morning for God to keep His hand on him that day, “or else I will betray you”. Know that the only thing that will keep you from sin in any hour is God’s grace. Without grace you will do lots worse than utter imaginary blasphemies under your breath. With grace you will love God and your neighbor. Without it you will hate God and your neighbor. We are not only saved by grace, but sustained by it. We have to place our hope and trust in God that He will sustain us. He loves us and if we ask Him for this help He will give it. The saints were saints, because they had confidence in God, not in themselves.
If you are worried that you might offend God and know that scrupulosity is a sin, stop being scrupulous or you do offend God. Instead, place your trust in Him who loves you. Pray that He will give you confidence in the love and mercy He has for you and set you free from the slavery of the sin of scrupulosity.

Scrupulosity is NOT a sin. It is a psychological disorder.

Part of understanding may come from getting some real and substantial help (perhaps medical?) for this issue of anxiety - voiced in multiple threads - and the sense of not being sure if you actually did something wrong.

Scrupulosity is NOT a sin. It is a psychological disorder.
Well it may be both. I have read of saints who suffered from scrupulosity and believed it to be sinful, St. Alphonse, a doctor of the Church suffered from it and said it was sinful. There are other examples I could give, but am pressed for time.

As with many sins today there are those in the Church who say they are not sinful. I could give examples of this as well. There are those who say this is a disorder and not sinful. That is not the traditional view of the matter, by earlier Catholics. I have seen the revent articles written about the topic by modern experts. All I can say is they are not on the same page as those who came before them.

I don’t think they had a good understanding of OCD back in the olden days, either.

There was no such term OCD or psychological disorder. They did know what sin is though. We moderns know all about OCD. It is when a serial rapist, or child molester does what he does out of obsession and compulsion. That makes it ok, not sinful, excusable. Drug addicts are the same, right? What about men with anger problems who beat their wives? OCD. There is no more sin you know. It got banned.

Please remember that this thread exists to help the OP. So, stay on topic. If you wish to discuss side issues, please take them to new or existing threads in the appropriate fora. Thank you everyone.
