I had a big problem with scrupulosity recently, but I am doing much better. I was going through a really stressful time, and I think my mind just had an overload. Throwing away a giant pile of sticky notes with notes about my next confession was a very freeing experience for me. Thank you all for your posts, and thank you for being short with me when I needed it.

Part of overcoming my situation was realizing that I should stop writing down my sins and just make an examination of conscience before confession. I am not against writing down sins for others; for me, it was just causing problems. I realize now that if I forget a sin, it’s okay. I can just say it next time. My question is what if I remember a mortal sin while the priest is giving me absolution? Should I interrupt him (I’m guessing no on that one)? Should I tell him after the absolution? Should I just say it next time?

My friend, given your tenacity, I cannot imagine you would somehow “forget” a mortal sin. Venial, maybe. Mortal – never! 🙂

Next time you go. I think it is unlikely that you will forget a mortal sin, though.
