After a deluge of intrusive thoughts about thinking blasphemous thoughts I started to stop caring. I am fairly sure I consented at one point, but barring certainty I know I shouldn’t believe I consented to any of this, per the advice of just about everyone who deals with this. I feel dogged by them and I just wanted to ask for prayer that if I have sinned in my thoughts or the things I have done , that God would grant me repentance.

Praying for your peace of mind and knowledge of God’s love fir you.

Outside of counseling and medication, to stop caring about these thoughts might actually be the best possible thing that could happen. Have you ever tried ignoring them? I know someone who had murderous OCD thoughts, and seems to me he told me that’s what they teach people to do with these kinds of thoughts and others, pay them no heed. This is part of the OCD. They aren’t your fault.

This must be terribly upsetting, but it seems the more attention you pay these thoughts, the stronger they will become.

Interesting,

Give the thoughts even less attention as you would the neighbor’s dog barking outside and they should soon stop bothering you…

Pater Noster…
Ave Maria…
Gloria Patri…

Just recently, I started to realize that an excessive preoccupation with one’s standing before God was nothing more than a tool of the adversary to stunt one’s spiritual growth.

Consider the famous “Gifts of the Spirit,” verse from Galatians 5:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

Joy and peace! Not a barrage of unpleasant thoughts.

Also, 2 Timothy 1:7,

“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.”

When you have that barrage of unpleasant thoughts, I bet you don’t feel particularly powerful, in control, or disciplined…certainly you don’t feel a spirit of love. You probably feel helpless and unequal to the task of fending them off. But timidity does not come from God!

God does not want you to spend your life being afraid or feeling anxious or unhealthy or paralyzed by doubts. Those feelings don’t come from God! You might think they do, but they don’t.

God has in mind better things for you to do with your precious time and spiritual energy. And, God judges you by the condition of your heart. That’s why a person could be forgiven of a mortal sin without confession provided they had perfect contrition. The desires of the heart are what God looks at; no one’s going to go to Hell over a technicality, and Hell won’t be populated by well-intentioned people who suffer from OCD and chose to stop worrying about this-or-that because they sincerely felt it was interfering with their relationship with God. That’s why mortal sin not only contains grave matter, but must involve knowledge and consent. It might be easy to go on an endless wheel of “did I know and consent” but instead of doing that, try to see those provisions as a source of comfort. The catechism is saying: “God looks at the heart.” Take comfort in that. The fact that you are running to this forum for help is a sure sign that your heart desires goodness and purity.

Kick the devil out! He is surely delighted to watch you suffer and, in lieu of doing real good in the world, moping about.

Lastly, 1 John is a favorite of mine for describing what fellowship with God “feels” like", this is from chapter 4:

“We have come to know and have believed the love which God has [d]for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear [e]involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. 19 We love, because He first loved us.”

Overwhelmingly, the witness of scripture is that the Spirit of God is a spirit of empowerment, healing, and experiencing the love of God. Further, God needs strong, healthy, people who can build His kingdom and joyfully witness to the Good News.

Perhaps consider praying to God that He would help you to discern between spirits, as well as protect you from the intrusion of the adversary. I am sure that OCD scrupulosity is nothing but the devil in disguise. As 2 Corinthians 11:14 puts it: “for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

Lastly, consider Philipians 4:6-7:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all [a]comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Take your concern to God in prayer. Your mind might manufacture anxious thoughts, but instead allow the peace of Christ “which surpasses all comprehension” to calm you down 🙂

I speak as one who has put up with a good deal of fear and scrupulosity in my life. It robbed me of joy and productivity, but I am doing so much better now. It won’t last forever, you will beat it! (Sometimes you just have to bottom out and get fed up with it, in which case your worst episodes end up being real blessings.) 👍

Well… We have a neighbours dog barking right now, I’m about to Scream…
We have a dog, you never hear him bark unless someone goes mad on the doorbell and bangs the door.

Next door they have two snappy dogs that are constantly yapping, even at midnight you only have to go into your own kitchen and they start yapping.

Why people can’t teach their dogs not to bark like I did with mine.

I actually prefer the sound my dog makes when he tries to talk. 😃

Well… At last it is silent… I was going out there if it didn’t stop…lol
It’s a Labrador , I had a dog, but it misbehaved so now uncle has it…
A friend has a dog that tries to talk…lot of fun…

Very well said and written. Thanks for the beautiful citations above.

Jesus Christ (God) and prayer in general is so beneficial in dealing with OCD, disturbing thoughts, anxiety, panic and worry. Our minds are graced by God’s beautiful creation. Thoughts and fears are a natural state of the mind, sometimes more excessive than we like. For whatever reason disordered thoughts can appear and exist, but through God’s grace the suffering can be relieved and sometimes removed fully. Moods and feelings can vary in the time it takes to eat a breakfast. Awareness of these thoughts and feelings is good. Pretending they don’t exist probably won’t work or help. But, don’t give them the importance you might tend to. In that the devil rejoices. Jesus is is your loving savior and can do all things. Look at your suffering as a cross you’ve been asked to bear. Realize that you are not alone, you are surrounded by others made from the same clay God chose to form you. You are special and God loves you infinitely. That means there is no limit to his love for you. God wants you healthy and happy. Seek out help through reading, or perhaps find a good Catholic therapist with knowledge in OCD. And, most importantly, keep building your relationship with Jesus Christ and do what we are told to do. Hint: 🙂 Review the Works of Mercy, and follow his two big commandments:

Matthew Ch 22

37 Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.

39 The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.

Maybe spend time with Jesus in front of the Eucharist. If any disturbing thoughts appear, do you really think he would be upset. No. He wants those who are suffering to come to him. He is better than Uncle Sam and he really wants YOU!

Lastly a little Catholic Reading on self esteem: catholicculture.org/commentary/otc.cfm?id=1129&repos=6&subrepos=2&searchid=1286755

God bless, Patrick

Gracious and merciful Father, please come to their assistance.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end
Amen.

Holy Michael the Archangel defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the Power of God,
thrust down to hell, satan and all the wicked spirits,
who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession and was left forsaken. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, a sorrowful sinner. Despise not my words, O Mother of the Word, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen

Prayer by St. Teresa of Avila

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.

Some very good advice on this thread.

Saint Michael the archangel, defend us in battle,
be our protection against the schemes and wickedness of the devil,
Let God rebuke him we humbly pray,
and do, O Michael, prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and
all evil spirits who prowl about the earth
seeking the ruin of souls!
Amen.

As a fellow “scrupe” here is one thing I know for sure: whenever the “tailspin” presents as the agonizing over details, the doubts, the obsessing over sin (real or imagined) - it is a sure sign of the evil one. Wherever confusion reigns is the sure sign of the devil.

A comforting thought - nothing happens outside of God’s will. He either ordains our circumstances or permits them for the good of our souls.

So if you are suffering these horrible fears and doubts, run to Jesus, jump into His loving Arms and tell Him you love Him. His Mercy is greater than anything. Greater than any confusion, fault, failing or even sin. He will not be outdone in generosity or love. May God bless you and ease your troubled soul.
