Hello everyone,

For anyone that has seen some of my posts, you would know that I suffer from scrupulous. Over the past couple weeks I have been struggling with sin, and have started to focus more on the scruples part of it starting to realize that maybe some thoughts and actions are not as big of a deal as it seems however. For example, I have developed a bad habit of looking at peoples chest. Ongoing, recently I was playing a kids board game with my sister and looked at a characters chest for some reason for 2-3 seconds after saying don’t do it, and trying to resist this. Initially, I felt guilty and felt the anxiety of a sin, possibly lust, but then I realized it is not that serious, and that I am honestly being ridiculous, and need to relax, and basically told the devil to get out of here because he is trying to make me think it is a big deal, or lust when really it was not and not that serious. Basically my point is, is that I am starting to improve my scruples, but it still needs a lot of work because my good morals, fear of offending God, going to hell, and devil tricking me, influences me and makes me feel more guilt and anxiety than I should because they are little things and not a big deal such as the situation above. My mom says that a lot of my situations are no big deal, and that you should not worry about it because you have always been the nicest kid, and certain thoughts and actions come with growing up, so it’s somewhat natural. But as I just said I still need to improve because scruples still affects me a decent amount. Overall does anyone have advice on how to overcome scruples? Thank you.

Please speak to your priest and let him know your struggles. He’ll be a key part in managing your scruples.

@HeavenChaser,

Thank you for taking this step to overcome your scrupulosity. Please note that none of the following supersedes the advice of a priest. That’s who you should be talking with, as soon as possible.

Stick to a limited and regular confession schedule. Weekly is probably too often but seek the advice of a priest, again.

If you can, stick to one confessor. Definitely do not seek out confessor after confessor to find one who will just tell you what you want to hear.

Consider finding a spiritual director who will be able to advise you on your journey.

Subscribe to the Scrupulous Anonymous Newsletter by writing to SA, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, Missouri, 63057. The monthly newsletter is free, edited by a priest, and very helpful (I know from personal experience).

DO NOT come the forums to ask if such-and-such is a sin. Save these questions for your priest.

TRUST in the mercy of God. When your sins are absolved in the Sacrament of Confession they are gone so let them go.
