Is there a difference between being scrupulous and a perfectionist? How do you combat it?

depends on how you mean perfectionist…

it can mean an excessive seeking for perfection or it can be a reasonable and calm seeking for perfection…

an example of the latter is the delicate conscience…

a ‘tender conscience or delicate conscience’ sees the finer distinctions and seeks very much to avoid even very small sins …and …who can judge normally between mortal and venial sin…when in doubt is able to make judgments overcoming his doubt by prudence or abide by good advice etc

as for scruples…

and scruples or those who are even of a higher degree of scrupulosity. for they take venial sin to be mortal…or non sins to be sins…or are plagued by doubts…unreasonable fears/anxieties about sins…they may fear sin even in most of their actions…etc

of course there are degrees in both and it is possible for a person to have generally a delicate conscience and still have a struggle with scruples in certain areas…

and a person may go from one to the other…

You picked a profound question that would likely take pages to fully explain

Being Scrupulous is having moral integrity : acting in strict regard for what is considered right or proper.

Being a Perfectionist entails the doctrine that the perfection of moral character constitutes a person’s highest good or the theological doctrine that a state of freedom from sin is attainable on earth.

Take a look at these two sources:
Asceticism: newadvent.org/cathen/01767c.htm and
Mortification: newadvent.org/cathen/10578b.htm

I hope they give you some answers.

Peace
Chris

not the case…not in moral or spiritual theology…this is NOT what scrupulous means!!

(that is only the dictionary definition of how the term is used in some common conversation)

By perfectionist, I would mean someone who strives to be perfect…in everything. Work, family life, relationships, hobbies, and religion. And because this person strives to be perfect, and cannot attain this, due to …imperfection…, this person is constantly filled with anxiety and stress to change this or that and overcome the flaws…to become perfect. The desire for perfection in work, hobbies…secular type things, are probably self-induced, but the desire to be perfect in relationships and in the moral compass in general is that ultimate desire of going to Heaven. This person seeking to fulfill the calling of being perfect…a saint.

Where the question of scrupulous comes in to play is when you get to the point where your anxiety for becoming perfect, always saying the right thing, doing the right thing becomes so much that you forget about enjoying the life that God has given you, is this being scrupulous or is it just perfectionism at its worst or both? And how do you overcome this where you can still strive to answer the call from Christ, but you can also live life with joy even knowing you have flaws?

Does that make sense? It’s hard to explain.

read the definitions i gave regarding scruples…are you worried about sins where there is non etc…or that things are mortal when they are venial…etc

being a ‘perfectionist’ as you say can be just that without the worries of scruples …

but this does not mean it is not harmful to ones spiritual life…

we need to follow Christ with joy!

a life of prayer and trust …and reading the New Testament can help …

i recommend these two books for you.
