so… I get home from work yesterday and I see on my door step a nice ‘newsletter’ about end times, he is coming blah blah blah…"

So, outta curiosity I pick it up and see what new information i was missing about revelation that whoever printed has somehow been informed on…

To my humor as well as dismay, it is nothing more than a tirade about how the Catholic Church is the WoB.

I figured, well, I’m catholic, maybe someone knew that and decided to lace it on my Doorstep to show me the error of my ways…

But as I am walking around my neighborhood, I see that everyone has this pamphlet.

I have to now ask myself…

Who is actually guiding the SDA… Man or Satan…

To get a pamphlet full of hatred, and out right lies (and lies that are known to be lies, yet they still publish them) How can you say it is out of Christianly love… As I said It was to everyone in my neighborhood…

If it was just to me, I could say… well, they are just trying to show me the error of my ways in the best way they know how…

However, what is the point of putting ‘Catholics are devils’ type material on EVERY doorstep, most of whom are not catholic other than to inspire hatred and distrust for Catholics…

Especially when it posts things known to be truly false. It is one thing to say things out of ignorance, but for some thing so easy to show as false, yet still print it anyway?

Since this is a SDA sponsored pamphlet, this can only mean that the SDA actually supports bearing false witness in an effort to cleave people from the Catholic Church, or even worse, inspire Non-Catholics to hate Catholics even more…

ALL THAT BEING SAID…

I fully accept and believe that there are people within the SDA that are true Christians… that elements not surround end times and the catholic church probably can lead people to Christ… But it seems to me, that SDA is more interested in hatred and spreading their hate than actually teaching…

If they didn’t, why would an entire pamphlet be devoted to showing the evil of the Church, instead of just… dare i say it, sharing the Gospel…

Last I checked… Hate the Catholic Church was not part of the Gospel…

Although Adventists hold some Dogmas of the faith, I don’t know if they are classified as fundementalists or a sect (i.e. Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses). I believe that they are very exclusive in that they consider all who attend Sunday worship as being in grave sin or idolators.

I have a sister in law that is SDA. I have heard many times about there views of the Church. On the main SDA website they don’t sound so bad.

adventist.org/beliefs/statements/main_stat42.html

I would love to find a pamphlet like the one you are speaking of so that I could ask her if those were her views. She always changes the subject when we start speaking of the Church.

I think you might have your answer right there. Adventists have some very strange eschatology. In fact the Branch Davidian was an offshoot of the SAD.

When the SDA first started they were influnced by boston unitarians known as the christian connexion. To give you an idea of that theology look at the Jehovah’s Witnesses because Chales Russell who started international bible students which became the Watchtower group learned his theology from SDAists.
Between 1900-1925 or thereabouts, their theology started becoming more trinitiarian like, until they were confronted by Watler Martin, and Barnhouse, at which point they made Trinity doctrine official in their denomination. So, before they accepted the trinity they were considered to be a cult, once they accepted the Trinity they became a christian group on the frenges because of their distinictives in theology like soul sleep, no hell, seventh day worship, great disapointment, etc.,

The late Walter Martin defended their title to consideration as Evangelical Protestants, while granting that they had some doctrines not shared by EPs; Anthony Hoekema (d. 1988), OTOH, considered them to be as much a sect as JWs, Mormons, or Christian Scientists. IMHO, Hoekema is convincing - I can’t say “more convincing”, because I’ve not read Martin’s book; but Hoekema’s reasons convince this poster, because he gives plenty of weight to the features Martin thought made the SDA Evangelicals, while also giving plenty of attention to the features of SDA belief that pointed the other way - such as the SDA doctrines concerning the :

  • investigative judgement
  • death of the soul with the body
  • annihilation of the wicked
  • "spirit of prophecy" & the prophetic office of Mrs. White
  • necessity of observing the OT Sabbath
  • **archangel Michael **
Hoekema also noted some uncertainty as to whether SDA teaching safeguarded the perfect sinlessness of the human nature of Jesus Christ. Hoekema’s background & theology was Reformed - Martin’s I don’t know.
**The book by Hoekema - The Four Major Cults - appeared over 40 years ago; that needs saying. But, unless SDA doctrine has changed considerably since the early 60s, there are quite few “problem areas”. Hoekema is careful to base his remarks about SDA doctrine on SDA sources. **

**A possible defence of Mrs. White - from a RC POV, not a Protestant Evangelical one - might be to say, that her messages are private revelations for the benefit purely of the SDA Church. But the difficulty is that this would be using a RC argument in the interest of a body which was anythiung but RC in outlook, & aspired (as its doctrinal make clear) to be Protestant Evangelical. She could be called a Pentecostal before the Pentecostal movement, perhaps - her messages could be regarded as a charismatic endowment, perhaps; but there are probably difficulties with that interpretation too. **

AFAICS, the Sabbath obligation is the SDA equivalent of “Outside the CC no salvation” as interpreted very strictly: IIRC, salvation despite worshipping on Sunday is possible, in some circumstances - but only just; Sunday-worship is “the mark of the beast”, who is satan’s poster-boy 🙂 **

Apart from their distinctives, SDAs seem to be pretty much like other Premillennialists (AFAICS)

I have trouble taking any religion seriously that believes eating mustard or pepper is a sin because they excite the senses and lead to sensual desires… They also believe that masturbation is on par with murder. No joke.

I work for an SDA University. It isn’t always easy being Catholic and working there, you should see the expression on the face of some of them when they find out I am Catholic. But, some of them aren’t judgemental, they are interested and kind. They are rebels though (in a whisper: they eat meat and drink soda).

The Vatican Hill was NEVER numbered among the 7 hills of Rome in Classical times (including Biblical ones).

Were one to now count it, it would mean that the RCC sits on EIGHT hills–but we’re etold that the Whore of Babylon sits on only 7.

Consequently, Biblicaly speaking, the RCC can’t be the W of B.

That teaching is consistant with Orthodox Judaism, based on the Genesis 38: 7-10. The equation with murder, of course, is part of the oral tradition. In fact, stimulation that leads to an erection outside of intercourse is a mortal sin. (Sorry I cannot provide and Talmudic reference for these, I am in the middle of moving and have most of my library packed away.) The idea behind this is that life itself is contained in the seed preceeding conception.

To me it is quite interesting that so many sects and fundementalists select one part of the Jewish Law to dogmatically follow while ignoring others.

Yes, just like Sola Scripture, Sola Fide, and so on. all these sects pick one or two things out the Bible as they understand and then a church is built.

If you submit yourself to a part of the law, you submit yourself to all of the law, and Christs suffering amounts to nothing…
