I’m not sure if I’m posting this in the proper thread but I just need to get this off my chest. I’ve been raised a conservative Seventh Day Adventist and have attended the same small church my entire life. I have been taught since childhood the strong anti-Catholic doctrine that is prevalent in independent Adventism and it had cultivated an intense fear of anything associated with Catholicism. During my senior year of high school last year I ended up meeting my first and current boyfriend who happens to be Catholic. This was a huge step for me, in fact I never was going to date him once I found out he was Catholic. I spent many days in prayer and each time I decided I was not going to proceed any further with him, God told me otherwise. Of course once we began a relationship I believed the Adventist way that I would be the champion who would lead him to my faith and God was using me to bring him into salvation. Close to a year later however I can definitely say that has not been what’s happened.
I have never been at peace in my church. There has always been a difference between me and my parents, the families I’d grown up with, even the pastor’s teachings. My heart told me I didn’t belong there and but fear told me it meant I wasn’t holy enough. A few months ago I realized that I could quote bible history, I could quote bible verses, I studied every day, but I didn’t have a personal relationship with Christ and this bothered me. There was one sermon I could remember in the years I have attended my church that actually touched me. The years of anti-Catholic sermons and the legalism of SDA’s had left me spiritually dead. What further bothered me was I had salvaged my Christianity from writings that were not from Adventism such as C.S. Lewis and his contemporaries.
Recently I have been studying the importance of a Saturday Sabbath or Sunday with a close friend and I believe I have come to the realization that Saturday is not longer binding. This is a huge issue for me because according to my church once I willfully break that commandment I lose my salvation. Further I have been researching Catholic doctrine for months and I feel like God is leading me to this church. It is after all His first church and the idea of apostolic succession is something that seems so plain and Gospel based to me after studying it. My boyfriend and his family are supporting me in my journey towards the Catholic Church and I am going to attend mass with him while my parents are on vacation. I just have so much fear in my heart from my Adventist upbringing. I’m terrified I’m not being led by God. I’m terrified I’m cutting myself off from salvation. I’ve never had peace in my own church or denomination but the fears are deep rooted in my heart. I need prayers. I can’t do this alone. I know if I do ultimately convert to Catholicism I will lose my family and their support. The idea of seeing the tears and confusion in their faces hurts me so much. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.

The Holy Spirit is already calling you into the Church. I pray that you heed that call. I was raised a Baptist, but I entered the Catholic Church in my late 20s. Don’t be afraid.

+++++++++++++++++

I shall walk through dark valleys, I fear no harm for you are at my side. Your rod and staff shall give me courage, No evil shall befall me, No weakness in my stride.
God wills not my foot to slip Or my guardian sleep, He guides me from all evil,
The Lord is my guardian; The Lord the shade I keep, By day the sun cannot harm me Or the moon by night.
For the Lord said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled, Have faith in God and also in me. In my Father’s house There are many dwelling places. If there were not, Would I have told you That I am going to prepare A place for you?
And if I go And prepare a place for you, I will come back again And take you to myself, So that where I am You also may be.”
If the Lord is with us, Who can be against us?

Greetings TabithaP!!! :hug3:

First - a couple of SDA conversion stories from the Coming Home Network: chnetwork.org/category/conversion-stories/by-denomination-or-faith/seventh-day-adventist/

Second - from Matthew 13:45-46:
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
God is revealing a pearl of great value (the Catholic Church) to you. I’m a convert and there were some tears and relationship issues when I converted - but ultimately love (and love of Jesus) won out.

:signofcross: Heavenly Father, protect, guide and bless Tabitha on this Spiritual Journey; give her wisdom, discernment, and strength; shower your compassion, grace and mercy upon her; let the deep and perfect love of Jesus fill her heart completely; give her overflowing joy; and perfect and soul-satisfying peace!!!

TabithaP,

I can recognize much of your story, though I was never SDA myself - I also grew up in a very anti-Catholic (and repressive) cultural and religious climate. Much of the anti-Catholicism was similar to that of the SDA, minus the things about Sunday laws and so on. Breaking away from it hurt, but it was also the most important - and best - decision of my life.

I will pray for you, and I wish you the best of luck as you discern your path forward.

Welcome home. Praying to the Holy Spirit to give you guidance, direction, strength & fortitude on your journey.

I wish you strength, I pray for you, and I will never take for granted the issue at hand: leaving your family’s religious culture, breaking a certain sense of loyalty in order to pursue a more complete truth. This is a great reach and God rewards such leaps. It also inspires some of us “complacent” Catholics to reach or leap in our faith more. God bless you.

Prayers for you to enter the Church with all fortitude and love, including from your family.

Welcome home,Tabby. Jesus has been waiting for you.

Praying for the Light of the Gospel of Truth to shine on you.

Catholic = fullness, complete, lacking nothing, Universal Christianity

I don’t want to ask this but feel like I should; if this relationship with your boyfriend doesn’t work out, what then? Are you doing this because you are head over heels in love with the boy or are you asking these questions because you want to follow the Holy Spirit?

Good question to ask anyone.

Praying that the Holy Spirit will open the hearts of your family to your jorney towards Catholicism. May they be open at least to the idea of it without disowning you and removing their support from you.

Mary.

I understand the hesitancy people hearing my story would feel. I was afraid to tell him or have his family know for this very reason. Absolutely none of this has to do with my love for him. If things don’t work out then I still intend to continue my journey to Catholicism. The guidance of the Holy Spirit comes before my relationship with him.

If this is so you have all my prayers. Going against your family & their support sounds very daunting. You may want to check out RCIA this fall. If you are really discerning the faith then that is the place to be. Good luck!

(Thanks for the clarification Tabitha!! :hug3:)

:signofcross: May God, through the working of the Holy Spirit, continue to guide you as you continue your journey to Catholicism; and may He give you peace and joy in this decision!!!

I’d like to thank everyone for their love and support. I’m going to have a hard decision ahead of me but I’m trusting to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Hello and welcome Tabitha,
You have obviously been chosen by Our Blessed Lord to follow the Catholic path. He loves you and will be rejoicing in your great courage at this time. Equally He will sustain and uphold you in all that you do for His sake, especially when it is so hard for you.
“May the Lord bless you and keep you,
May the Lord make His face to shine upon you …” ( from an Irish Blessing)

I am praying hard for you.
