Hi all,

I am not sure, if I am allowed to post this thread, but I’ll give it a try.
The Mods can still erase it afterwards.

I’ve got a collegue who is a Vegan.
Now, I’ve found out that Ellen G. White (The Prophet of the SDA Church) has written many books, and also about Diatry.
**
To the SDA (or Ex-SDA):** Which books would you recommend me (or better said him, as I’d like to make him one or more of her books as a birthday present - he is an atheist *, btw.) concerning diatry and health?

I think there are also other books of the SDA publishing board (where parts of Ellen G. White Writings are quoted and analysed or so). What would you recommend me in this respect? (in General, but Also in Respect of Nutrition and Health).

Finally: I know that Ellen G. White
a) has written EXTREMELY Anti-Catholic stuff.
b) and has written 500 or more books plus a thousand pamphlets.

Now, if I were a SDA, which books are a must have? (Except the Bible of course! ;))

in Christ,*

“The Great Controversy” is an interesting book EG White authored…as well as “Desire of Ages”…those SDA’s I have spoken with both recommended these two.

I’m not sure. I’m new to SDA so I have to see what kind of books there are. I hear a lot about the Great Controversy though. It’s supossed to be a good book.

Just because someone speaks the truth…or what they truely believe to be the truth does not make them anti-catholic. I used to believe that too once. We get called that a lot.

But I haven’t read any of her books so i’ll see.

Hm, don’t want to quarrel with you here now, but
don’t you think it is quite Anti-Catholic to say that Rome is the Great Beast in Apocalypse Chapter 13.
and that the Pope is the Antichrist? — Because this is what Ellen G. White wrote in her books. (I believe it was in “The Great Controversy”)
I’ve once heard a SDA preacher speak on TV about Apocalypse 13, and this was one of the most Anti-Catholic preaching I’ve ever heard…

But despite that, I think they are good fellows who follow Christ with all of their heart! 🙂

Esdra, with respect to books in general you might want to have if you were SDA…

My SDA friend has given me EGW’s “Steps to Christ”.

Also “Bible Answers” and “To Know God” both by the Review and Publishing Co of Hagerstown, MD.

And “To See the King, 7 Steps to Salvation,” by Pastor Doug Batchelor.

And as Publisher recommended, my friend has also spoken of “The Great Controversy” amd "Desire of Ages.

I wish I could of more help though to you on ones more specific to SDA dietary. Perhaps I can attempt to reach my friend and if she recommends any dietary specific ones, I can get back to you here or via PM.

Hi my dearest brother! 🙂

Thank you for the Book List.

Feel free to PM me at any time! 🙂

Hi Esdra, my friend would say they are not anti Catholic. She tells me they have nothing against the Catholic people. Their big thing is they believe the Catholic Church changed the 7th Day Sabbath. The state of the dead and dietary are others. But haha we have gone to dinner together and she insisted I could try the pork. Though out of respect for her, I didn’t. But she and other SDAs have assured me there will be Catholics in heaven. And yes I agree they follow Christ with all their hearts and understanding.

Well, I am also not really sure how much they still adhere to the teachings of Ellen G. White.
I think the SDA Church has quite much changed the past few years.

On a German Sect-Guide (run by the Swiss Evangelical Reformed Church), they wrote i.e. that SDAs are going more and more towards “mainstream Reborns” (=Freikirche in German; like I am attending).

I am at the moment in contact with a SDA pastor, just wrote him an Email. (;
I wonder what he’ll write back.
But as far as I understood it, the teachings (except maybe dietary), are becoming less and less important in the SDA Church.

Yes from what I have gathered, I think perhaps like other religions, there are varying degrees of adherance. My friend’s mother for example would not go to a movie. My friend on the other hand loves to go to movies. She also has tasted shrimp and I think clam chowder. 🤷 But truthfully she has not broken from the dietary laws very frequently otherwise. Some SDA women will not wear make-up. Yet I know of some who wear a little. To get to know the faith a bit better I once took an online SDA Bible study. I have also corresponded with an SDA pastor who wrote back very kindly the next day. So I hope you hear back from the one you wrote to as well.

Although they’re somewhat more centralized than other Protestant sects, the SDA’s still have a lot of variation on what behavioral and doctrinal prohibitions are emphasized in each congregation. I’m a content and proud American Catholic, and my wife is an Adventist from a congregation made up purely of immigrants from South America- her congregation is far more conservative and restrictive than the norm in New England.
I receive separate but not-quite-equal status at social functions. The admin staff from her congregation treat me warmly, but the congregants run hot and cold- I sort of get the love-the-sinner-hate-the-sin treatment, the sin my being Catholic, of course.
It seems to me that among the more educated and complex SDA thinkers I’ve encountered, that Ellen G. White’s works are viewed with a mind to not throw the baby out with the bathwater- there is a lot of pussyfooting around the the more blatant anti-catholic rhetoric.

White did not just make that up. We believe it to be biblical. In my church, they don’t preach and teach Sabbath after Sabbath about Catholics and Rome and the Pope. No, we go to church to hear the Word of God and His soon return. Not how to be anti-Catholic. 🙂 SDA do not hate Catholics as a people. Hating would go against God’s Word. We are just people who follow and love God’s Word. 🙂
We just have our beliefs just like you have yours and everyone else has theirs.

Yes, that might be.
Nevertheless, I found it not very nice of this pastor to preach that hard against the Vatican/Rome and the (R)CC…

I mean, I know that they believe some things differently than SDA or Baptists, nevertheless most of them are devout Christians and love our Lord Christ Jesus.

That’s what my pastor always said, “It doesn’t matter in which Church you are, but it does matter if you love Jesus and are trying to obey His commandments or not”.
And what I could add here, “The only point we differ are different traditions.”

God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the same, as well as in the CC, as in any other Christian (Trinitarian) denomination.

And again a nice post of my dearest brother Matt! 😉 🙂

You indeed have an eucumenical spirit (maybe even stronger than I have.) 😉

Just read over your post again. Your friend is an atheist? Are you sure White’s books would sit well with him? You could find many other books out there on health but maybe her books would be a witness to him. 🙂 Anyway I found some books on health written by Ms. White.

Cool, thank you! 🙂

Yes, my friend is an atheist, but a really fundamentalist/fanatic Vegan.
So, yes, I think as a witness so that he nevertheless might find to Christ, these books’d be useful.
Don’t you think?

I don’t know. Do you think he would like reading that little boys and girls with meat on their tables won’t have their prayers heard by God? Or that eating animal flesh arouses a persons animal passions? The listed books are full of this sort of hooey, but if you think your friend needs a laugh go ahead!
