It’s an old movie but it had had quite a large impact on me. The synopsis of the movie is about a rookie detective, David Mills (Brad Pitt), teaming up with soon-to-retire William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) who take a case of finding a sadistic serial killer whose meticulously planned murders correspond to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, pride, lust, and envy.

It’s classified as a psychological thriller but, theologically, it represents the ill-effects of apathy in the real world. Without giving the whole plot away, it is evident that towards the end we finally come into terms surrounding why the serial killer engaged in such heinous acts, that the victims were not completely innocent. The climax was very hard hitting and did make me contemplate for a while, though it was excellent nonetheless.

What are your thoughts on the movie?

I think it is an exellent movie, because of the raw ending I would say. It is also easy to see why religieus fanatism can have a bad outcome. I would say it is better to find good in people above bad.

But clearly this movie makes the circle go round in a way, if one talks about the way sins can work

I really liked the movie. Along with “Momento” it is one of my favorite films. The Morgan Freeman character beautifully reflects the transformation of an individual from cynicism to hope. It is interesting that this transformation occurs because of his witnessing the ugliness of sin and the suffering of Brad Pitt’s character.
Interesting point, the studio heads wanted the ending changed because they believed it would turn off audiences. It remained largely because of brad Pitt’s support of the director’s vision. I’m glad it stayed. It’s one of the hardest scenes, in cinema, to watch, but it’s impact emotionally and intellectually is very powerful.

I guess it shows why people shouldn’t play God and punish others for their sins in the manner that the serial killer did; it is for God alone to judge, not man.

“Whats in the box!” (Brad Pitt ROCKS!!! 😃 )

I love Se7en, its sooo cool.

SPOILER ALERT

Imagine that you were one of his victims, in which sin would he get you?
Oh man, I’d get snapped in at least three-four of them… Wrath or Pride i guess… A real thought provoker there. I really need to better myself

“John Doe has the upper hand!”

I saw this film when it first came out in theaters. My friends and I were so disturbed that we could not go home afterwards, we needed to get a coffee and talk about other things.

Morgan Freeman was really good in it. (I’m old enough to remember him on The Electric Company) Does anyone remember his “pro life” talk with Mrs. Mills?

Ugh, I saw this movie in college when they showed older new releases in one of the big lecture halls. I found it really disturbing and even today 20 years later I am recalling how disturbing it was.

Great movie. Definitely a classic. Kevin Spacey is one of the best villains ever in that movie for sure.

Didn’t like the ending nor thought it was clever. Although haven’t seen it since forever ago, so maybe I’d see it differently now. Hard to say since I don’t remember that many details.
