I chatted with someone in their 80’s - great Catholic
What he thought - about receiving the Eucharist by hand.
No ! ( then the strong and convincing explanation )
So…went to mass today…a touch nervous, as the time approached…
A delicate old lady Eucharistic minister -
Received via mouth

Back to the old school way !
😇

The previous week, I received by hand,
from a Priest - a few towns away - at another church -
and he acted disappointed…that only I could notice…

I mean, yeah, cool, but like Claire said, you know it’s not somehow “better” than receiving in the hand, right?

Glad to hear that you switched over. I used to receive exclusively in the hand, but switched to receiving via the tongue some time ago. I thought it would be awkward at first but quickly got used to it. It is always good to show the Lord proper reverence.

Communion on the tongue seems to be benficial. I am grateful that we can only receive on the tongue at my parish.

This older man said - this ‘receiving by hand business’ was never so…
He mentioned a story about a Cardinal -
who refused to give the Eucharist - to nuns - who held out their hand.

I know either way is acceptable -
But it bothered me -
I was an altar boy - and held the catcher…next to the Priest.

The priests I go to do not know how to distribute to the mouth. Seriously. Twice this has happened to me and from priests who should know better, since they are at least in their late 70’s. The first one tried to stuff the host in my closed, clasped hands. I stood there and looked at him with my tongue out. He was flustered and didn’t know what to do. The second miss my tongue yet again and host fluttered to the floor. And before anyone screams at me, my tongue was way, WAY OUT, no way he could miss. That’s why altar servers should be there with their catching plates, there was a reason for it.

I think Rome should offer a refresher class for all priests to learn how to distribute the host properly to those of us wanting to receive on the tongue.

I take it on the tongue unless I go to a new priest. I generally will take it in the hand unless I see the Priest giving it on the tongue.

At a new church, I went to receive it on the tongue because it was an older Priest. I figured he was used to it. When it was my turn to receive, I opened my mouth and stuck out my tongue. A look of terror came over the Priest and I realized he probably was trying to hide Parkinson’s Disease. It landed on my tongue, but it cold have easily been pushed into my eye. (or landed on the ground) I heard he retired two months later.

When in doubt, receive it in the hand. (Unless Rome brings back altar rails.)

So either im not understanding how the topic matches with the body or this is clickbait

When I went back to the church after a million years away from it, I was amazed that communion could be received in the hand. I couldn’t even do it at first and received on the tongue until one preist insisted that I received in the hand. One day after receiving communion in the hand I noticed that there were crumbs from the host left on my palms. I licked the crumbs from my hand and now I receive only on the tongue.

I always check my hand when receiving on my hand. Today I too had crumbs. Not sure if receiving on the tongue would help since there is no paten to catch the falling crumbs. That is why I usually receive in the hand. I would prefer receiving on the tongue.

Yes, the older guy told me, also,
that he’d love to see the altar rail come back…
but he shrugged and said it’d never happen.

You do not know this. As a matter of fact, it seems like the best we know is that Jesus gave the bread to the disciples before he consecrated it. Hence it is no more likely that the apostles received in the Body of Christ in the hand than on the tongue.
I agree both are valid. But neither seems to be the form of the Last Supper, so let’s quit making that argument in favor of communion in the hand.

We don’t know, but it seem way more likely that He handed it to them as opposed to placing it directly in their mouths. That’s just not something people typically do.

Receiving in the hand is not irreverent. If you prefer to receive on the tongue, that’s totally fine, but just recognize that it’s personal preference.
You’re not being more reverent or holy or getting extra credit.

It seems he did not hand them the consecrated host, but he handed them bread and then consecrated it. That would be our best guess and is not the same at all as either if our means if receiving communion.

If it is good enough for St Peter, it’s good enough for me.
