As time has passed since the writings of the great spiritual classics, we have had new insights into the dynamics these writings present, and with these new insights of come new words or nouns to contain those dynamics and new insights. One of these new words is “self awareness” which is intimately connected to true humility and the foundation of all virtue. What follows is one of a series of articles, all of which I will post into threads over time. They are well worth a read.
Our new insights in no way at all changes the dynamics of spirituality and mysticism presented by the great spiritual writers – if they did they could be held decidedly suspect in my book.
The source of these articles is “The Aquinas Academy” by the Marist Fathers and the articles are written by Fr Michael Whelan SM, PhD, Principal of Aquinas Academy.

…….”…………St. Teresa of Avila: “I don’t know if this has been explained well.
Knowing ourselves is something so important
that I wouldn’t want any relaxation ever in this regard,
however high you may have climbed into the heavens.
While we are on this earth nothing is more important to us than humility.
So I repeat that it is good, indeed very good,
to try to enter first into the room where self-knowledge is dealt with
rather than fly off to other rooms.
**This is the right road **
and if we can journey along a safe and level path,
**why should we want wings to fly?” **…….”………
…………”…………Nor should we think that the simple fact of believing in Jesus Christ is enough to preserve us from this tragedy. The quest for holiness can mask self-centredness. This may be manifest in such attributes as dogmatism, moralism, legalism and judgementalism. The self-centred pursuit of holiness has nothing to do with holiness and everything to do with an infantile wish for a life that is rendered safe and secure in the knowledge that I am doing the “right” thing….”……….
