I was reared well and thoroughly as a Tridentine-type Roman Catholic during my childhood, but as a result of two marriages, one to someone rigidly anti-Catholic, and the second to a very post-Vatican II-type Catholic, I find that much of my learning — and some of which I didn’t even know at the time —*has slipped.

While I have found sites like Fish Eaters to be helpful, they are not always all-encompassing. I ask not so much for myself (though having a bound reference handy would be quite nice) as much as I do for the need to sometimes provide a relatively quick answer to non-Catholics estranged from traditionalist Catholic relatives.

(As an example, the granddaughter of a devout, traditional Catholic was quite distraught because the lady’s daughter, having converted to another faith that relies solely on proselytisation, prevented her grandmother from receiving Extreme Unction. I knew the basics of buying Masses to be said for the soul, but had no idea of the frequency in the tradition. There have been dozens of small incidents like this, and I’d prefer to be able to find the information at hand.)

I’m also looking for a traditional prayer book — not necessarily in Latin, but I’d appreciate one that had a copy of the six litanies and the less-often used prayers, such as the Eternal Rest Prayer, Down in Adoration Falling, and such.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Praise be to Jesus Christ,
Jessica

I would perhaps recommend the Catechism of the Catholic Church for the all-encompassing reference material and for a good traditional prayer book I would recommend a traditional Missal, which wil have the litanies and other prayers you are seeking

The sins or failures of the children/grandchildren should not prevent sacraments especially the Extreme Unction for their parents, grandparents. If she ask for it, it could not be denied.

We Catholics do not say ‘buying Mass’ but ‘offering Mass’ for the death. This was the main source of income of the Church between the Great Epidemics (12th-13th century) and the established land (18th Century) or later established donations. The XIX Ecumenical Council defended this practice, and it is still in practice. The Canon of the Mass also justifies this practice:

Remember, Lord, your servants N. and N. and all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. For them and all who are dear to them we offer you this sacrifice of praise or they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them, for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and fulfilling their vows to you, the eternal God, living and true.

Here are a few common books dealing with traditional Catholic teaching:

This is a basic list for indroducing someone to Catholic teaching and theology. These books do not deal with spirituality as such nor devotions, philosophy, history etc. There are many more books available. Also, if you find these somewhat basic or if you read Latin, there are many more theology manuals, textbooks etc.

Prayer Books:

***The Raccolta or A Manual of Indulgences ***
