A new priest came into our parish after much secrecy as to why the former one left. A great upset. There are many questions, and secrets that only a few privilaged are allowed. My husband and I have fallen away again. We have witnessed the unfair treatment of some of the parishoners. Those that have given all they could, not monetary, but of their time, talents and love of the religion, have been tossed aside. Basically felt as though they are not wanted or needed. The second graders are making their first communion without having all the proper education. Our church is in turmoil. How can this go on? Where does one turn when they cannot look to their priest for answers or guidance?

I also would like to know where I could go to get some answers to things that are bothering me and my faith.

Is there an official complaints process in the Catholic church? Have you gone to the priest? Maybe you should take your concerns to the Bishop?

:hmmm:Church policy is to not tell more then a few need to know. I can’t say nothing about why your former priest had to leave, and I guess you will never get a answer to that,in one of our few parishes the same once happened.
Go and talk to your bishop,or write him a letter, but to keep it clean, let the priest know what you do. Maybe he will explain. But remember,You serve and believe in Christ, not in the church.👍

It has been my observation that every time a new Pastor is appointed the apple cart in the parish is upset in some way. Sometimes it’s less painful than other times, but nonetheless, things do change and some people have a hard time adjusting to the changes.

Everyone’s perception of what is fair and good is a little different, and each Pastor may have a different set of priorities. Rumors also abound. When our new Pastor came some of the senior staff resigned their positions. The rumor mill started, but I have reason to believe that most of the rumors were untrue, the people left because of reasons varying from new jobs in the family and they had to move, to an overcrowded schedule, and they and their families were suffering from it. The timing was mostly coincidental, but not in every case. And when a Pastor abruptly leaves people are highly suspicious of some illicit activity on the Pastor’s part, while the truth is he may have been considering it and having talks with the Bishop for a while.

We lost some parishoners with the new Pastor (our previous one unexpectedly got ill and died), but we also gained new members. The rest of us just muddled through the few changes he made and accepted them, realizing that nothing is static, change is inevitable. It’s probably best to wait it out until things settle down, and then if things are unbearable, find a new parish.

Your Faith should be in th Word of God, our Lord Jesus Christ. Everything else is subject to change.

If you make changes in what ever you are given charge of, or make a decision to change jobs or what ever. Is it any business of any one else? Some one leaving may be for personal reasons, and the rest just might be respecting that.

Priests come and go. They serve at the pleasure of the bishop. The Bishop has all the authority to assign priests at his discretion. Now having said that let me ask you if you know if your priest was reassigned somewhere else? We had a situation in our parish where the pastor was suddenly replaced with no explanation given. The rumor mills ran overtime. It was several years later that we learned that the priest was removed at his request to care for his elderly mother. He was an only child and there was no other one in the family to care for her. The bishop granted his request and respected his and his mother’s privacy. Very few people in the parish knew of this and with the priest sex scandal in the news you can imagine what all the rumors were about. But even now with the truth revealed those rumors are now coupled with conspiracy theories that there is a coverup going on.

In any event why should this affect your faith? Let’s assume the worst here. Let’s assume that your pastor was removed for heretical teaching. Maybe you thought I was going to say maybe he was involved in the priest sex scandal? I think heretical teaching is much worse than that. But none the less, my point is how does that affect your faith? Your faith is more than one man even if that man is a priest. Maybe I should say your faith should be more than one man even if that one man is a priest. Apparently your faith isn’t. Whatever reason your pastor was removed doesn’t affect you. If it was for a crime or a sin then that is his crime or his sin. But giving up your faith is your sin and you can’t lay the blame for that on your pastor or the bishop or anyone else but you.

I know a lot of people who allegedly left the church because of the priest sex scandal. I picture these people standing before God in judgement and offering the defense that they left His Church because someone else sinned. I wonder how far they get with that excuse. How close is that to the unforgiveable sin? I think very close.

I agree you should consult your bishop. As for falling away, remember not to reject Jesus because of Judas—a man Christ hand-picked himself.

As for answers, this forum is one of your best bets. Your faith is not founded on every priest or parish serving the Lord well. Faith is founded on the Incarnation and establishment of a Church by Christ in accord with revelation, both ini Scripture and that passed on through the Apostles’ successors. I recommend you strive to be the best, most informed Catholic you can be regardless if someone else in the Church is scandalizing you. Is there another nearby parish you can join? If not, God may be calling you to represent the faith well among those in the parish you are at now.

  1. Go to a different parish.
  2. Meet with the Bishop to discuss the problems in the parish.
  3. Find a priest that you like to talk with about your personal issues.

I do appreciate all the answers and suggestions that I have received from this forum. I think for my own peace of mind and some sort of closure, I should tell of my story and why I am in the state of mind that I am in.

I was the DRE for our parish. I had the position for one year. When I was assigned the position there was some sort of hard feelings from the previous DRE who was resigning to better move on with her family and life issues. Well, I was given no guidance, no education, no leadership. But I tried. I dove head first into my job. The first item was VBS. I was under a great deal of pressure as you all know how much is entailed in VBS. I was always asking for volunteers for the various tasks and duties that are required of a DRE for the parish. I was begging for Sunday School Teachers. For the most part, the Education Committee that I was assigned, (now mind you I had no idea that there was an Educaiton Committee already.) So the names of the people that I was given by our priest, I called and they all accepted the resposibility of being on the Education Committee. I thought that I had a very supportive Committee to work with me. I did, save for one member.

Well, the year went on, we got things accomplished. Did what we thought we were supposed to do. I constantly asked for advice, comments, whatever from the parish as a whole, as I had no idea what we were doing right or wrong. I went to meetings with other DREs, and asked for help in matters that I didnt know the answers to.

We were assigned a new priest quite abruptly in January. Our priest announced one Sunday that he would be leaving in 4 weeks. There was never any public explanation or anything for the majority of the parish. mind you, I live in a very small town. Our priest heads three parishes within about a 30 mile radius. Being a small parish, there are names that have run things for many years. There are those that have done things for many years, and they have the most say and pull as to what goes on. I have been a member of this parish for 8 years, and have never heard of a parish council election. The members of the council, just look at eavh other and ask who would like to be the president of the council. I dont know if that is how things are supposed to happen, but that is what happens here.

In August, when we were working to start the new year of Sunday School, all of a sudden there had to be a whole new Education Committee appointed. There were members of the parish that were told outright, that they were not able to be on the committee. remember, that there are names that run everything, and they came to an Education Meeting and ran that also. I just sat there, while my whole committee was taken apart. The new members had one thing on their adgenda. To change Sunday School from Sunday morning to Wednesday evening. Well, that didnt work. But then all of a sudden, I was called by the new priest, who had never talked to me about my job or my position in the parish. He called me to a meeting and fired me. No reason, nothing. Just fired me.

There was never any explanation given to me. Nothing has been said to the parish as a whole. That was in October. I have tried to go back to church there, I cannot. The parish has no idea what happened. I dont know what people are thinking of why I am no longer involved. why my husband is no longer a part of the choir, or on the parish council. I feel very betrayed. I wrote a very detailed letter to the bishop, with no response. I have heard from others in the parish, that the religious education of the young in our parish is suffering. I have been told that the second grade teacher told the priest that the students were not ready to make their first communion due to lack of education because of the time that has been taken away from sunday school for other activities. such as christmas program, no sunday school, etc. Well, I heard from her that the priest said, “just teach them what you can, they are going to make their first communion anyway” WHAT IS THAT??? I am very sad that the children are not learning what they are suppose to learn, but are being taught that it is important to practice for a program, and not learn the necessities for first communion.

Well, I want to thank those that have taken the time to read this. I have been in such a state of depression for 6 months now. My husband and I are attending a Methodist Church here in town. We cannot go to a catholic one due to the fact that the priest in this church in town is the priest in the nearby ones also. So to go to a catholic church, we have to drive 40 minutes. while we look out our front window and see the church that we had thought would be our home for the duration of our time here on earth.

God bless you all. I pray everyday that God will give me the strength and answers to my prayers and delimas, so that I can put this unhappiness at rest. I do love my catholic faith, and hope that God will show me the way to peace.

Blessings to all
