Searching for quote about not presuming guilt in others (Augustine or Aquinas?)

Hopefully someone here knows this. I remember hearing a quote about not presuming guilt in others; I think it was St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas. It went something like this: If you think another person has sinned, assume that you’re mistaken. If you can’t do that, assume that they did not intend to do wrong. If you can’t do that, assume that they did it out of ignorance.

Has anyone else heard this and can you point me to the source?

Thank you. I’m not sure if this is the same one that I’m thinking of, but you did remind me that St. Francis de Sales has such great meditations on the topic. It’s been awhile since I’ve read Introduction to the Devout Life, and I need to pick it up again.
