Searching for Short Term Housing

Does anyone have any tips on how to search for temporary housing in locations one is not familiar with?

With DH’s job during “busy season” we often travel and stay several weeks/months in different cities/towns around the US. I enjoy being in new places, but its always very difficult to find a place to live while there. Hotel rooms are really difficult since we have 3 kiddos with the oldest being 3, which translates to crying every now and then, and even regular children noise, etc, plus its hard to get them to sleep when we are all in the same room. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas/suggestions. Its also hard to find short term rentals. Oh well.

DH used to travel a lot and his company owned corporate apartments and suites they rented to employees below market rates, won’t hurt to ask. RE agents are another source as they may have unsold properties they want to rent to keep them from standing empty. When we worked in Ohio for a few summers, we went this route (until DD moved back and bought a house so we could bunk with her-literally).

colleges are another possibility as regular student rentals are used to s/t occupancy, and the college itself may own rental units. DD stayed in dorms with her family one summer at her school because they home was not ready to move in yet.

Go to www.VRBO.com. This is a website of vacation rentals listed by the owners. One year my sister’s family and I went to DisneyWorld for Christmas and rented a three-bedroom, two-bath condo for something, like, $700 for the week. The owners might be willing to cut better deals if you could rent them for longer periods of time – especially if they’re in a place where it’s off season.

When I moved to a small town I needed to find a place to live while I hunted for a house so I found a privately owned apartment and asked if I paid 100% upfront if we could have a 3 month lease… they were more than happy to do this because they knew that gave them 3 mos to schedule a new lease rather than the possibility of it sitting empty and not making money.
