Hello-

Looking for a go on one of the solas…may be a little over my head with this screen name but thought it might be some good bait!

The 5 Solas of the Reformation form the core of my beliefs:

Sola Christe
Sola Fide
Sola Gracia
Sola Scriptura
Soli Deo Gloria!

Particularly passionate about Sola Scriptura, and the doctrine of justification by faith alone through grace alone.

Anyone want to join?

Thanks

Sola Scriptura isn’t taught in scripture. That makes it rather problematic.

And faith that saves simply doesn’t exist alone, which makes the concept meaningless.

This isn’t a forum I’ve posted on before today so I’m not experienced in apologetics. But when I looked at your list, my first thought was, “Where’s the church in this list?” Because Jesus said, “on this rock I will build my church.” (I don’t want to discuss whether the rock was the person of Peter or his profession of faith) My point is that He specifically said He would establish a visible church.

The church He built on the apostles with Himself as the cornerstone existed for over 300 years before gathering together some of the earliest church writings and excluding others to form the definitive list of New Testament scriptures which is used even to the present day. This was done under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which was given to the church to lead it into all truth.

Now, if I were to accept sola scriptura, I would feel like I was saying the Holy Spirit at that time hopped out of the Church and into the Book, that the Spirit-led church that gave us the Bible ceased to exist! But this isn’t what Jesus promised. To me, the Bible is the book of the Church, by the Church, and for the Church. The two can’t be separated.

God gave us the bible through the church. If any individual or group says the words of the bible mean something novel or contrary to the church’s teaching, I wouldn’t trust them; I’d trust the Spirit who operates both through the church and the bible.

That’s my reasoning for not accepting sola scriptura.

It might also serve you well to use the search feature here in the Apologetics forum to check to see if any threads are currently discussing/debating any of the topics in your list and then join that one rather than have to begin a new one.
