While weddings are discouraged during Lent and Advent, they are not forbidden. The character of those two seasons are to be retained even in the wedding celebration.I’ve just heard that there are specific times when Catholics cannot marry (i.e. Lent) - is that true? I’d never heard this before. I did try to do a search on the forum and nothing relevant came up, although perhaps I’m not a great searcher!

While it is a time of anticipation it still retains a penitential nature, albeit not as much as Lent. We don’t sing the Gloria, we don’t have many flowers, we keep it very low key during Advent.Maybe I’ll learn more about this in RCIA…
Why Advent? I could understand Lent, such a solemn time of repentance and reflection, but Advent to me has been an anticipatory time, maybe it’s different in the Catholic Church?

Advent is also a time of solemn reflection, although not as penitential as Lent. It symbolizes waiting in the dark for the birth of Christ, the light of the world. Notice that decorations in the church are minimal and the musical settings are stark in comparison to ordinary time. This is to bring into stark, clear relief the exuberant joy of Christmas.Maybe I’ll learn more about this in RCIA…
