Seats for sale at Christmas Mass

In your opinion it’s disgraceful, but is it really? Will anyone be turned away from Mass who doesn’t have money? No. Are only certain seats set aside for this fundraiser? Yes. Has the archbishop disapproved? No. Is anyone being told they will spend less time in purgatory or that they are buying salvation for themselves or their loved ones? No. So, why is it disgraceful for people to want to give money for a seat in church when it is completely voluntary, no one will be turned away who hasn’t any money, and the money will be going to a worthwhile project within the parish?

If one wishes to complain, perhaps they can send enough money so the Parish doesn’t have to do this to raise money 👍

Upon reading your post, I’ve changed my mind. It is a good thing. In fact, let’s start selling season tickets!

There is a place for donations, it is called the collection plate!

Okay. So, let’s get rid of all the bake sales, brunches, spring and summer festivals, diners at state fairs, and other fundraisers, too.

If human nature was a pure as you would like, there’d be no need for even a collection plate. People would volunteer to do everything that needs doing in a parish from teaching children to moping the floors to making candles, and so on and so on.

I agree it’s disgusting and I would have a hard time going to parish doing it.

Having a bake sale outside of Mass is one thing, selling seats for Mass like it’s some theatre event is another.

Geez, no wonder people don’t respect the holyness of the Eucharist as they should these days!

**At the very least, it shouldn’t be done because those “prime” seats should be set aside for the elderly and/or disabled. **

:tsktsk:

Many syngogues have required tickets for attendance at the High Holy days for many years.

I’m not suprised that the Catholic Church is beginning to follow the lead of our Jewish friends.

I made a proposal to the building committee for our new church that we sell loges and naming rights but they didn’t go for it. I also thought instead of vigil candles we could have those lighted signs where the advertising message changes every 30 seconds like in the ballpark. DH suggests we find a weeping statue someplace and charge money to see it, hey we’re just trying to help the church and this beats running bingo (which he did for 5 years at our old parish).

oooh the humor police, yup I was kinda joking, but I think the committee could have given my idea at least some discussion without kicking me out of the room

**😃 don’t want to be the humor police - you just never know these days what some people would actually consider… I thought I was pretty safe though as I’ve read anough of your posts to get a feel for your writing style.🙂 **

Don’t be silly. Can’t see the difference between a bake sale and the money changers in the temple?

When you think of it, it actually makes good business sense. The Church is trying to capitalize on one of the 2 busiest church days of the year. The people who buy these seats will not be the regular church goers but people who only attend Christmas and Easter. Why not cash in on it? These same people will spend hundreds on gifts, whats a few more bucks for Church?

Along the same topic, if I was a priest I would charge $5000 to perform a wedding as a cash grab. I am of Italian heritage and we spend a minimum of $50K on our weddings up here and some of my relatives complain at the $250 bucks the church charges them. However they dont think twice about the 20K on the banquet hall or the 5K for flowers and the other 5K on the photographer etc., etc.,

If there only going to attend 2 or 3 times a year, let them pay for it!! Maybe they will appreciate it more.

Can you tell I am a sales manager.

Its pretty wrong and i would be embarrased to even sit down in the seats that were paid for. maybe they should put the tickets on ebay. 1000$!!! some seats for the olympics cost less than that.

I too find this sort of thing disgusting and much too close to simony for comfort. If I was in such a parish, I would find somewhere else to attend Christmas Mass.
