Okay, I can handle all of the naysayers out there, so bring it on, but I have to have my say on what I know of a Jesuit university education.

When you and your child get ready to find a university, not only do you have to worry about whether it is secular or Catholic, but what kind of standing it has in the educational world. How is the particular university rated by graduate schools? How are the various programs ranked for entrance into professional schools? I know many of you will say that rankings don’t matter - try to get into medical or law school from an unranked university and then you will rethink your standing.

My daughter was accepted at Fordam, Loyola Chicago, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount in 2002. She decided on Loyola Marymount because it was only 500 miles from home and it would be less expensive to visit during vacations. She was a political science major and received an absolutely marvelous Poly Sci education. Many of her professors were Jesuits and this child learned how to think on her own! As far as campus clubs go, she was in a national sorority that fed the hungry in downtown Santa Monica as one of their activities. (Which the Santa Monica Police did not approve of). There was a very active pro-life group on campus and many different religious groups to join. Each dorm had a priest assigned to it to counsel the students. Our children have to learn how to live in the real world and discern for themselves that our Church is the one true way. My daughter is now 25 and in her final year of law school in Chicago. Has her “liberal” education at LMU caused her to leave the Church? NO!! Jesuit universities are not like BYU, they prepare their students to live and work and pray in the entire world, be it one we agree with or not.

First of all I’m curious as to how you know members of the gay group which meets in Campus Ministry are not celibate? Is this something they publicly advertise or is this mere conjecture? If the latter isn’t this something along the lines of false witness?

Secondly, you make allegations about “liturgical law”. What exactly are you claiming? Are you mistaking para-liturgical gatherings for formal liturgical services? Or are you bothered by something else? For example some are upset that “women are on the altar” serving as lectors or eucharistic ministers. Others become crazed by girl altar servers.

I don’t know if this is actually “intellectual pride” or a matter of how one interprets church documents for pastoral purposes.

Anybody have any idea where St. Joseph’s College in central Indiana would rank as a truly Catholic College?

I have a friend who teaches there, a priest with the Missionary Society of the Precious Blood. It has been staffed by the Precious Blood for many years and has an excellent reputation. If I recall correctly they have an undergraduate program or course on Catholic culture.

Like all good Catholic colleges and universities they “think with the church”

I know. I went there and am still puzzled as to why they never appear on the list of colleges loyal to the Faith.

I went to a Jesuit High School–Saint Louis University High–and dearly loved my experience and the Catholic teaching there (11 years ago). I only learned later the liberal tendencies of Jesuits. Looking back I saw hints of it, but not too much. SLU seems worse. Regis University in Colorado, where I received a MS, seemed not too troubled. Yet some Jesuit institutions apparently are mortally corrupt.

I know this thread has been dead for nearly a year, but I just read today a OneNewsNow article identifying Seattle University and wanted to do a search to see if anyone has brought this up yet.

The headline: Jesuit School Cozies Up to Abortion Broker
onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx?id=1318408

I was shocked enough to read the first entry of this thread. The article to which I refer is worse.
““Students are actually being referred to Planned Parenthood for so-called ‘sexual health issues’ which, as we know, Planned Parenthood performs nearly a third of the abortions in the United States,” says Reilly. “And promoting internships with Planned Parenthood – encouraging students to get involved with organizations like the National Organization for Women and other pro-abortion organizations.””

This activity is totally intolerable. It is not just sleeping with the enemy; referring students for services or internships and promoting membership in such institutions is quite equivalent to deliberately reaching in to assist in and recommend the murder of innocents. Everyone involved now has the blood of infants on their hands.

I would urge anyone with any connection with Seattle University to do all in your power to spread the word about this crime and work to have it stopped. All donors should be notified, for to continue to donate to such an institution, no matter what else it is doing, would constitute (as I understand it from Church teaching) the grave matter of mortal sin, not only aiding in the support and promotion of these abortionist institutions, but in a heinous scandal of the corruption of a Catholic institution and confusion of our Catholic faith.

I pray that the Catholic community will rise up and demand repentance, and that bishops will exercise strong leadership. I understand the Jesuits to be outside the control of the bishops, and so an appeal to the Pope may be necessary; but actions such as these are worthy of the strongest condemnation, even excommunication.
