Okay, I can handle all of the naysayers out there, so bring it on, but I have to have my say on what I know of a Jesuit university education.
When you and your child get ready to find a university, not only do you have to worry about whether it is secular or Catholic, but what kind of standing it has in the educational world. How is the particular university rated by graduate schools? How are the various programs ranked for entrance into professional schools? I know many of you will say that rankings don’t matter - try to get into medical or law school from an unranked university and then you will rethink your standing.
My daughter was accepted at Fordam, Loyola Chicago, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount in 2002. She decided on Loyola Marymount because it was only 500 miles from home and it would be less expensive to visit during vacations. She was a political science major and received an absolutely marvelous Poly Sci education. Many of her professors were Jesuits and this child learned how to think on her own! As far as campus clubs go, she was in a national sorority that fed the hungry in downtown Santa Monica as one of their activities. (Which the Santa Monica Police did not approve of). There was a very active pro-life group on campus and many different religious groups to join. Each dorm had a priest assigned to it to counsel the students. Our children have to learn how to live in the real world and discern for themselves that our Church is the one true way. My daughter is now 25 and in her final year of law school in Chicago. Has her “liberal” education at LMU caused her to leave the Church? NO!! Jesuit universities are not like BYU, they prepare their students to live and work and pray in the entire world, be it one we agree with or not.
