The Catholic Church has been quite clear about our need to reduce our environmental harms over the past 40 years, starting with Pope Paul VI – see conservation.catholic.org/pope_paul_vi.htm

Before the 1960s that I don’t think the environmental harms were as massively life-threatening, and people were not as aware of them. But since the 60s we have been acutely aware of them and our responsibility to mitigate them. At least those who highly value life. It’s partly why I became a Catholic – because of the Church’s high value on life (and also I found it to be the true spiritual path to God). I’ve not been so impressed by lay Catholics’ disregard of Church teachings and of the environment, and their seeming joy in harming and killing thru environmental harms, as expressed so eloquently in this thread – how people want to secede from the union in order to evade environmental regulations so they live a more gluttonous, profligate life and kill more people in the process, the blatant disregard for others. It’s pretty disgusting to me, if not to y’all.

This is not one of your environmental threads, lynnvinc. NO ONE has expressed “seeming joy in harming and killing through environmental harms.” I haven’t missed your whacked-out posts since you’ve been gone.

Then get the Battle flag down. Before you fly that flag, know what it means (liberty), what it doesn’t (racism), and what it has been paired with (the KKK flag and racism when they chose to use it). People wantonly waving this flag around are detrimental to the cause of Southern Pride and secession.

And keep in mind that our star spangled banner has plenty of blood it too from the ethnic cleansing that gave us a free ride for 150 or so years.
 
Reading this thread I’m reminded that the culture war has been WON. Just not by the religious.

the only free ride i can think of is forcing others to do your labor for free,(e.g. slavery) and i have never figured out what the south has to be proud of 🤷

While I cannot recreate all the information and structure of each essay, and summarizing them in some way does them a bit of an injustice, I do want you to know why I am so enthusiastic about this book and want you to read it. The title essay, “Black Rednecks and White Liberals” demonstrates that so much of the urban “black” culture is really not African in origin, but comes from the now extinct culture of northern Britain. The folks who brought their culture with them from Scotland and environs tended to settle in the South, owned slaves, and became what we call Rednecks. The slaves took on the culture of their masters and this leads to the term Sowell uses in the title.

Protecting a dysfunctional way of living because it is in some way African is not only masochistic, it is a false concept. Instead, the rejection of education and literacy, casual sexual attitudes, and the failure to structure life to prepare for the future are actually artifacts of the slave master culture (that portion of slave holders who were Rednecks, that is). Sowell contrast this reality with what is done by White Liberals to protect Urban Blacks to the detriment of those supposedly being helped.

Really? I can only imagine you have not studied history or culture much. The South is where all the major battles of the Revolution were fought. The South had the first public universities. The South was and is the most Christian area of the United States. The South fought a war against invaders nobly while the other side burned down whole cities. The South is the source of all American music genres specifically country and rock and roll. In recent history the great moral evils forced upon the US come from the Northeast with support from California. The South left to its own would outlaw abortion. The murder of children is a far greater moral evil than slavery. I know several murderers while I know no slave owners.

Because the slave owners are gone.

But if the CSA had had its way, you would have known several elderly former slaves, and ex slave owners.
