Second Confiteor at you parish?

In viewing this video, I was surprised to see the congregation saying the Confiteor during the priest’s communion. I had never observed this before; my experience with the EF is limited to two parishes, and only since the last year. Our pastor is diocesan but trained in the EF by the FSSP.

Sure enough, there is a thread on this forum here regarding the second Confiteor. It is excluded by the 1962 Missal.

So I have been wondering: how widespread is the practice?

All of the SSPX and FSSP masses I have attended have included it. There are two other diocean Traditional Mass in my area. One of them does say it and the other does not. Overall, I would say that about 80% of the masses I have attended (all over the country) included the second one.

So I have been wondering: how widespread is the practice?

It was left out of the 1962 Missal but never formally suppressed. From what I hear some stopped using it and others continued using it in the 1960’s.

I have been told that the Ecclessia Dei Commission was asked by the FSSP (and maybe the ICR?) if it was permissible to use the 2nd Confiteor and they were granted permission. I’ve heard most but not all FSSP priests use it. The FSSP then went on to train many (most?) diocesan priests who offer the Extraordinary Form and naturally they taught them to use it.

When I am able to escape the “falsification of Catholic Liturgy” (Redemptionis Sacramentum 169) that is offered at my parish one of my absolute favorite things to do in the world is to attend the EF Mass at a nearby parish.

The pastor there (a diocesan priest) always uses the 2nd Confiteor. And as he is the one who trains other diocessan priests in the EF then I imagine they probably use it as well. The former associate pastor there did not care for it and did not use it. All of the FSSP priests who have offered Mass there while passing through town have used it I believe.

I am sure if the Ecclessia Dei Commission ever decides to disallow it then all of these priests would humbly obey. But, I hope that never happens as it is one of my favorite parts of the Mass.

Good observation ! I thought it was always like that. Am I the only one for whom it seemed the norm?

Before the current chaplaincy started, there were some priests who let us use the 2nd Confiteor, and some who didn’t. I wish the chaplain would let us use it. We haven’t had it since he started.

My parish (SSPX) always says it. I have also assisted at Masses offered by the Society in other countries, and these priest also used the second Confiteor. At the FSSP Masses I have heard, it was used. However, the ICKSP in Rome, as far as I can recall, did not use is, nor do any of the diocesan weekday Masses in my area.

I can see why you are attached to it. It is a lovely custom.

It was formally suppressed by rubric.

Even according to the tradition of rubrical interpretation that extends to other things such as bows, crossings, Votive Masses,etc. it’s omission from the Ritus Servandus constitutes a suppression, were it not to be explicitly done by rubric (which it was)

In my extensive experience in the movement, it is about 50-50 among FSSP priests.
