Many approved private revelations and recent popes from the last century have foretold of a coming great “triumph” of the Church in which she will come to encompass the “fullness of the gentiles” and be “confirmed as closely as possible with the Church triumphant in heaven”.

Saints as well respected as St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Bonaventure, St. John Vianney, St. John Bosco, St. Dominic Savio and others have made such predictions.

I’m not familiar with those revelations, but it seems like something that could happen. Maybe as a way of strengthening the Church for the great tribulation that is supposed to occur.

Here is the actual quotation from St. Bonaventure that I had in mind:

"…The End is not to be placed there, because no one knows how long that time of great peace will last since “when they said ‘Peace and security,’ then suddenly destruction came upon them” (Matt. 24:21).

The seventh time or age, that of quiet, begins with the shout of the angel who “swore through Him who lives forever and ever that there would be no more time; but in the days of the seventh angel the mystery of God will be completed” (Rev. 10:&-7)…

In the coming seventh age there will be a restoration of divine worship and a rebuilding of the city. Then the prophecy of Ezekiel will be fulfilled when the city comes down from heaven (Ezek. 40); not indeed that city which is above, but that city which is below, the Church Militant which will then be conformed to the Church Triumphant as far as possible in this life. Then will be the building and restoration of the city as it was in the beginning. Then there will be peace. God alone knows how long that peace will last…"

Most of the private revelations situate the “Second Pentecost” after a ‘minor tribulation’ but a good while prior to the ‘great tribulation’.

**Comparative study of the three works in which Montfort speaks of the end times (SM, PM, TD) leads us to distinguish four successive and intersecting stages. Together they make up the scenario of the final days of the Church.

a. First stage: tragic state of the Church.

b. Second stage: divine intervention within salvation history.

This intermediary stage is the most dynamic and active, because during this stage we pass from the reign of sin to the reign of Jesus Christ in the hearts of men and women. Montfort is convinced that the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ should not be projected into the hereafter but must come into existence on earth, in this world: “Is it not true that your kingdom must come?” (PM 5). **This is the leitmotif of TD from its first sentence: “It was through the blessed Virgin Mary that Jesus Christ came into the world, and it is also through her that he must reign in the world” (TD 1; cf. 13, 22, 49, 157, 217, 262). Who will be able to transform the world? For Montfort there is no doubt: God alone can accomplish such a task. He will intervene with “a deluge of fire, love and justice” through the mediation of the Spirit and the manifold acts of Mary (PM 13, 15, 24-25; TD 49-56). This divine intervention will be through and in mankind, especially through the “apostles of the end times” (TD 58)****. Their task will be twofold: “destroying sin and setting up the kingdom of Jesus” (SM 59).

c. Third stage: the Second Coming and reign of Jesus Christ.

There is no doubt that “the whole Church expect him [God] to come and reign over all the earth and to judge the living and the dead” (SM 58). This Second Coming of Jesus will lead successively to the reign of Jesus in the world and to the Last Judgment, although not in tandem. Here we see the characteristic vision of Montfort: the universal and stable reign of Jesus (PM 4) anticipated in time as an effect of his coming. Jesus “comes in glory once again to reign upon earth” (TD 158), “the knowledge and the kingdom of Jesus Christ must come into the world” (TD 13), “you yourself will ask of Jesus, together with Mary, that he come with his kingdom on earth.” It is not a visible and personal advent of Jesus and a temporal kingdom, as millenarians would hope for; Montfort insists that the kingdom of Jesus is “in the hearts” (TD 113) or “in our soul” (TD 68). In other words, Jesus will reign when, by the intervention of Mary, he is known, loved, and served (TD 49). In TD 217, we have the logical and perhaps even chronological steps: reign of Mary, coming of the Spirit, reign of Jesus Christ. We also see here how Montfort spirituality has as its goal the establishment of the kingdom of Christ: “‘When will that happy day come . . . when God’s Mother is enthroned in men’s hearts as Queen, subjecting them to the dominion of her great and princely Son?’” (TD 217).

d. Fourth stage: the deluge of the fire of justice and the Last Judgment.

III. THE APOSTLES OF THE END TIMES

Although this phrase, (TD 58) of Montfort, is used only once, it summarizes his thought on the end times. He describes at length the condition, activity, and spirituality of these apostles.

1. Who are they?

Their identity gradually becomes clear. Montfort speaks first of “great saints” (TD 47), “great souls filled with grace and zeal” (TD 48)…

The work of the apostles of the end times swings essentially around two poles, one negative, the other positive: “destroying sin and establishing the reign of Jesus Christ” (SM 59). The first pole involves a series of aggressive actions against the forces of evil: they “will give battle, overthrowing and crushing” (TD 48), they “will thunder against sin, they will storm against the world, they will strike down the devil and his followers” (TD 57), they “will be the odor of death to the great, the rich and the proud of this world” (TD 56). In the PM, along the same lines, Montfort foresees missionaries who will attack and overthrow the “enemies of God” (PM 8, 29), who will “crush the head of the serpent” (PM 12), “address their ardent prayers to heaven, turning them into the weapons which will overcome or convert their enemies” (PM 25).

The positive pole, which is described in more detail, consists of actions directed at the reform of the Church and its extension into the world: their “ministry will renew the face of the earth and reform your Church” (PM 17). With this objective, the apostles of the end times will carry out sanctifying apostolic work: they “will enkindle everywhere the fires of divine love” (TD 56); “wherever they preach, they will leave behind them nothing but the gold of love” (TD 58); they will be the “sweet fragrance of Jesus” (TD 56). They will “build the temple of the true Solomon and the mystical city of God” (TD 48), and they will “shower down the rain of God’s word and of eternal life” (TD 57).

Moreover, they will work to extend the Lord’s empire “over the impious, the idolators and Muslims” (TD 49), receiving the deluge of fire that will empower them to convert “Muslims, idolators and even Jews” (PM 17).

This essentially relates to the “peace” promised by Our Lady of Fatima (the peace to be expected once Russia has become consecrated to her immaculate heart).

One can see the same sequence of future (hypothesized) events reflected in the prophecies of other church-approved visionaries, such as Venerable Bartholomew Holzhauser in his Visions and also in his Commentary on the Apocalypse that was first published in 1646.

In this prophecy the “apostles of the end times” (as St. Louis de Montfort calls them) are referred to, as in a number if others,bad the “Holy Pope” and “Powerful Emperor”:

And towards the west the heavens were opened, and the land trembled as with an earthquake, and the nations were shaken, and terror came over the whole kingdom; and it was told me: ‘On the king depended the salvation of the people! And it seemed to me as if he refused; and I heard: ‘If the king will not, then will he be smitten.**’ And the heavens again opened towards the west; and a large fiery ball came down, flew oblique, and smote the king. And now his kingdom rested in peace, and the land was illuminated.

And lo! I saw a ship sailing on the sea, and arrive in port, and righteous and holy men, who were in the ship, landed and they began to preach the Gospel in those countries. They prospered in their undertaking; and that land returned to peace and the sanctification of Jesus Christ…**

The succeeding period of the church the (status consolationis)—time of “CONSOLATION” begins with the Holy Pope and the Powerful Emperor, and terminates with the birth of Antichrist. (Revelations, 3: 7, 10.) This will be an age of solace, wherein God will console His church after the many mortifications and afflictions she had endured in the fifth period. **For all nations will be brought to the unity of the true Catholic faith…

The spread of the church over all countries will take place by the instrumentality of this Strong Monarch, and before the destruction of the world, Christianity will be preached to all nations of the earth;** as this is foretold in Matthew 24:4; in Isaiah 2:2; and in Micheas (Micah) 4:2. To this wide diffusion of Christianity allusion is made, when John is obliged to measure the temple of God.(Apocalypse 11:1).

A type of this period was the sixth age of the old world, from the deliverance of the Israelites out of the Babylonian captivity, and the rebuilding of the city and of the temple of Jerusalem, down to the coming of Christ…God pour out upon His church, that witnessed in the fifth period nought be affliction, the most abundant consolations…

**The empire of this monarch (that I had seen standing on the sea and on the earth), that is to say, the supreme president, the guardian and protector of that empire, and the propagation of the true faith on earth will not be obtained without noise and without storm…

All nations will come, and will worship the Lord in the one true Catholic Faith. Many righteous men will flourish, and many learned men will arise**. Men will love justice and righteousness, and peace will dwell on the whole earth. For the Omnipotent will bind Satan for many years, until the advent of him who is to come,–the son of perdition.

Back in the 70’s when the Charismatic Movement was taking off in the US, I heard it said that Pope John XXIII had prayed for a 2nd Pentecost and that the actions of the Holy Spirit seen in the Charismatic Movement, may have been it.

Not saying it was, but just the mindset of the time.

Pope St. John XXIIII did predict that Vatican II would help lead the way to a new Pentecost. He opened the Vatican II Council with this prayer: “O Divine Spirit, renew your wonders in this our day as by a new Pentecost.”

To be honest though, I have never been greatly enthused by the Charismatic Movement. While I do not deny the signal graces many have received from these “charisms,” I feel that some elements of the movement leave much to be desired.

The New Pentecost foreseen in many private revelations owes more to the idea of a massive “evangelization” that will surpass all others and usher in a “civilization of love” in which Our Lord Jesus reigns in the hearts of all men through triumph of the immaculate heart of His Most Blessed Mother Mary.

St. Louis de Montfort tells us,

"**Toward the End of Time, God will raise up great men full of the Holy Spirit and imbued with the spirit of Mary, through whom this powerful Sovereign will work great wonders in the world, so as to destroy sin and to establish the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, her Son, upon the ruins of the kingdom of this corrupt world…

Almighty God and his holy Mother are to raise up great saints who will surpass in holiness most saints… Such are the great men who are to come. By the will of God, Mary is to prepare them to extend his rule over the impious and unbelievers…

It was through the blessed Virgin Mary that Jesus Christ came into the world, and it is also through her that he must reign in the world…"**.”

So I believe that this relates more to the concept of the “Social Reign of Christ” propagated by Pope Pius XI in his 1925 Encyclical, Quas Primas, which established the feast of Christ the King, where he stated:

Peace and harmony, too, will result; for with the spread and the universal extent of the kingdom of Christ men will become more and more conscious of the link that binds them together, and thus many conflicts will be either prevented entirely or at least their bitterness will be diminished.

If the kingdom of Christ, then, receives, as it should, all nations under its way, there seems no reason why we should despair of seeing that peace which the King of Peace came to bring on earth…

Oh, what happiness would be Ours if all men, individuals, families, and nations, would but let themselves be governed by Christ!

Men will sheathe their swords and lay down their arms when all freely acknowledge and obey the authority of Christ, and every tongue confesses that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.”**

These great souls filled with grace and zeal will be chosen to oppose the enemies of God who are raging on all sides. They will be exceptionally devoted to the Blessed Virgin. Illumined by her light, strengthened by her food, guided by her spirit, supported by her arm, sheltered under her protection, they will fight with one hand and build with the other. With one hand they will give battle, overthrowing and crushing heretics and their heresies, schismatics and their schisms, idolaters and their idolatries, sinners and their wickedness.

They will be as the children of Levi, thoroughly purified by the fire of great tribulations and closely joined to God. They will carry the gold of love in their heart, the frankincense of prayer in their mind and the myrrh of mortification in their body. They will bring to the poor and lowly everywhere the sweet fragrance of Jesus, but they will bring the odour of death to the great, the rich and the proud of this world.

They will be like thunder-clouds flying through the air at the slightest breath of the Holy Spirit. Attached to nothing, surprised at nothing, troubled at nothing, they will shower down the rain of God’s word and of eternal life. They will thunder against sin, they will storm against the world, they will strike down the devil and his followers and for life and for death, they will pierce through and through with the two-edged sword of God’s word all those against whom they are sent by Almighty God.

They will be true apostles of the latter times to whom the Lord of Hosts will give eloquence and strength to work wonders and carry off glorious spoils from his enemies…Yet they will have the silver wings of the dove enabling them to go wherever the Holy Spirit calls them, filled as they are with the resolve to seek the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Wherever they preach, they will leave behind them nothing but the gold of love, which is the fulfillment of the whole law…

Such are the great men who are to come. By the will of God Mary is to prepare them to extend his rule over the impious and unbelievers. But when and how will this come about? Only God knows. For our part we must yearn and wait for it in silence and in prayer: “I have waited and waited”…**"
