Secondary Papal Provision?

is there a means in the church for replacement or a “vice pope” in for example, a case where a living pope suffers a stroke (or accident, or something else) and ends up mentally incpacitated or brain dead? does the incapacitated pope remain in place? i know a pope can step down, but doesnt this require expressed consent, which an incapacitated person cannot give.

i dont think i have ever read about such a thing (and i am not advocating it either), but doesnt the church have the forethought to recongnize that bad things happen to everyone? i am just wondering what “secondary protocol” is for such occasions, and if there are safeguards in place.

As of yet I don’t think such a policy exists however I think it wouldn’t hurt for the Vatican to conider it imagine if some future Pope were to lasp into a coma for a extended period or “persistant vegetative state” it would be catastrophic.

I think each pope sets up how his government will work. I think the best way woudlbe to have an prime auxillary bishop of rome to run the diocese, select bishops (if the pope was incapacitated and there was a grave nessessity), run the church day to day, but would be prohibited to difine doctrine or exersize other petrine faculties.
