Because nobody really (except Church of Christ and they are inconsistent in this) really believes in Bible Alone.

Like I:say, for me personally it is a misleading title.

Thanks anyway (for the non-answer). You said there are 7-9 version of Sola Scriptura. Guess I have to wait for those who really profess Sola Scriptura to enlighten me, if there is any.

My apologies for re-railing the thread, but it gets even more bizarre.

There are distinct contributions from Maccabees and “Susannah and the Elders” (a beautiful story in the last chapter of Daniel) in the Book of Mormon, which is blatantly and viciously anti-Catholic. They probably used the KJV deuterocanon. :ehh:

I do actually do apologetic work from time to time, but nothing hard core in about four years now. I found that it started just frustrating me to much, so it wasn’t healthy for my faith life. I do know a good deal about some of the Protestant faiths, but I don’t get into it as much as I used to. I found that focusing on my own faith was what made me grow in my love for Christ and his Church.

Why? Would you say the same about Orthodoxy? The early Church councils were represented by all of Christianity at the time. Not so with Trent.

Sola Scriptura is Latin for “by scripture alone”, so I am not sure what you are talking about. Maybe Lutheran’s have have a different definition or application.

I was curious though, does your bible contain the word “alone” as added by Martin Luther? I have always wondered which bibles contain this word and how different denominations handle the historic fact that it was Luther that added this word.

SS - scripture alone, has to do with the practice of using scripture as the final norm. IOW, it is scripture alone that is the final norm. It does not exclude other teachers or teachings, but instead makes them subject to scripture as the final norm. Those who reject other teachings, none of whom to my knowledge are splinters from Lutheranism, practice solo scriptura.

Luther used the word “allein” in Roman 3:28 in German as part of the translation into German. It is not necessary in English, and therefore does not appear.

Hi Reuben,
Different “Protestant” groups have evolved from different splintering from the CC. It was never a singular church. Therefore, I can’t speak for what Calvinists, for example, do or believe, in much the same way that a Catholic cannot speak for Orthodox rejection of papal supremacy, even though both Churches claim to use the same Holy Tradition.

This is an honest question, not a baited one, maybe you can open a thread to describe the differences in the now two versions of Sola Scriptura?

It will get out of hand fast, but would be interesting to see the differences anyway.
