Deceptive, maternity coverage is available from private insurance in the form of a rider.
This PDF explains some of Anthem’s maternity benefits for example.

The point, which I think you missed, is that while Obama and the HHS secretary is mandating all sorts of things be covered in the base policy that everyone has access to-- including contraception and abortion-- they seem to be excluding a basic service-- maternity care.

I have not researched this so I cannot vouch for the veracity of the article, but I am just pointing out that you missed the point. It **isn’t **about how maternity is handled today (which is via riders by those companies that offer it and the rider includes a lengthy waiting period). It **is **about how maternity is being treated under the NEW legislation.

First, you linked to an insurance policy in Virginia. Each state has different rules and mandates.

Secondly, maternity coverage is available as a rider only on the premier plan. So you have to pay extra for the premier plan and then pay for the rider which covers maternity.

From the article:

I found, after a very brief search, maternity coverage from a private insurance company. In addition to Anthem, I found that Blue Cross Blue Shield offers a maternity benefit.

Moreover, the author claims:
When Obama enacted his “health care reform,” he mandated that maternity coverage not be available to any private insurance company.”

In other words, maternity is ruled out at a federal level. Therefore, state’s regulations are irrelevant. If a state has maternity coverage, it invalidates the author’s claim.

Lastly, the health care law actually classifies maternity care as an “essential health benefit” so all insurers that participate in the state-run exchanges will have to provide it.

I can’t help but wonder how the author got this so wrong.

Just FYI: the article in your link reports the “memo” to be from “A Family Planning Perspectives Special Supplement” published by Planned Parenthood-World Population,
NYC, NY, 19.70.

The actual source of the excerpt in the article is:

U.S. Population Growth and Family Planning: A Review of the Literature. Robin Elliott, Lynn C. Landman, Richard Lincoln and Theodore Tsuoroka
Family Planning Perspectives Vol. 2, No. 4 (Oct., 1970), pp. i-xvi

Which was a report the government requested from a “think-tank” in the late 60s and not something ever published by Planned Parenthood.
