Gardens, I guess their could be nice guys that did not know how to treat their wives, but I can’t say I have ever seen a nice husband not try.
Agreed. 🙂 I think good women try to make their husbands happy too. We just don’t always know what makes our spouses happy. The original article offered wives some suggestions on how to treat their husbands. In the interest of fairness and balance, I offered some suggestions to the nice guys reading this thread. I assumed the men reading this thread were interested in learning secrets to a happy marriage.🙂
Believe me, I have a lot of experience dealing with girls/ladies and making the ladies completely happy at any given moment in time, is sometimes, shall we say different, than executing the tried and proven principles of respect, kindness, consideration, sensitively, gentleness, etc, etc. No what I mean?
I know what you mean. Perfect happiness doesn’t typically happen in this world. No human will ever make us completely happy. Even the most perfect spouse is mortal and subject to human frailities they can’t control like death and disease. Sometimes peopl have unreasonable expectations for spouses to provide “complete happiness.” That’s not a spouse’s job–that’s God job

Some of us seem to be just different from typical genders as described here… so I’d just say that a happy marriage involves one wehre both spouses are doing their level best to be good Christians first and thus: put their spouse first (both of them should be willing to sacrifice), be honest, considerate, open, respectful and think of the real needs of their spouse. If my husband wants me to pay the bills and deal with all sorts of bank tellers and government officials, because he hates it, and I don’t mind it, I’ll do it, even if, according to the article, this would be more of a man’s job.

Here’s a brief rundown of “to do” points from For Men Only:

#1 Reassurance–reassure her you love her and let her know your need for space isn’t because of something she did wrong.
#2 Emotions-don’t say “just don’t think about it”.
#3 Security-for most women, emotional security is more important than financial security. Most women are willing to downsize their lifestyles to have their men around more.
Yes, yes, and yes! You have just summarized the three arguments that I have with my boyfriend (the ones that I start, anyway ;)). However, I realized that I can tell him outright, “the reason I get mad when you don’t call is because I’m worried that you’re not interested in me and don’t love me.” Then he’ll go out of his way to reassure me when he needs his space that it’s nothing to do with anything I’ve done. There’s nothing better than the feeling of applying some advice and realizing, “hey, it works!” 🙂

I think hysterical is a bit strong. She is not against it…

I agree with her. You cannot expect an entire industry to change its function to agree with your personal religious convictions. If you cannot fulfill the functions of the job, go into a different field. We, as Catholics, have no right to impose our religious moral beliefs on non-believers, nor on industries. It would be like a Quaker demanding to join the military, but refusing to take part in all that messy, immoral (as they see it) war fighting.
Are you serious?? People have every right and opportunity to find another physician if they don’t like their Catholic one.

I like to give people “Dave Barry’s Complete Guide to Guys” as a wedding present - but only after finding out that they can handle some vulgar humor.

I call it my marriage manual, because underneath the humor there is a lot of wisdom. We both learned from it.

For instance, I learned that guys don’t hear hints. Now, after I drop a hint, I say, “By the way, that was a hint!” and he pays attention!

Plus, it’s given us lines that have become family jokes-with-a-point, like “I can’t believe they called a draw play on third and seventeen!” and “Did Elaine ever own a horse?” (Sorry - you’ll just have to read it. Your library might have it.)

Thanks for this. It was my post to which the person was responding and claiming that Catholic medical providers in support of Humanae Vitae should find another line of work, but I just didn’t have the heart to get into a big debate at that time.

The sad thing is that there are enormous nubmers of physicians available to perform abortions, provide contraception, artificially inseminate lesbians, etc. The anti-religious lobby is trying to force pharmacists and physicians to violate their conscience, when the services the secularists desire are readily available elsewhere. How distressing that some people would claim that the solution to this problem is for Catholic physicians to find another line of work!
