Hey has anyone heard of the Secular Franciscan Order.
They are hosting a retreat near by that I am thinking about going to. I was just wondering what they were about.

The Secular Franciscan Order is a Third Order, from what I understand. You are part of the Franciscan Order, but it is comprised of lay people. So you can be married, single, living in the world, etc. Anyone who is called to Franciscan Spirituality.

That’s all I know about it, but I am trying to join. If I find out more, I’ll pass it on. There is a lot more information on their website. www.nafra-sfo.org.

I started the process of entering the SFO but backed off due to the fact that right before I started formation my wife got pregnant. I figured it would be best to wait.

The Secular Franciscan Order is like the Third Orders of many other groups, but it isn’t THE Third Order. When I first started looking into it, this confused me. Third Order Franciscans are usually priests, deacons and nuns, similar to First Order Franciscans but they tend to live in the “real” world a little more then First or Second Order Franciscans. Many Third Order Francicscans are priests of diocesan parishes, work in schools, etc.

The Secular Franciscan Order is for lay people that want to follow the rule of Saint Francis, which can be found on the link that was already provided. At least in the group that I was involved with there is a Third Order priest associated with the group to provide spiritual advice.

The process for joining is basicially you first must attend 3 of their normal meetings (usually they meet about once a month.) So you can find out about the group. Then if you are still interested you enter formation. During this period you study, and determine if you are really called to enter. After the formation period you take the vows.

From what I found there are a very devote group, of course this like any other group could vary depending on the members of the organization in your area. There are many members of SFO online that can better explain what it is like.

Thanks for clearing that up and for your thoughts on the SFO. I’m very excited to learn more about it.

And congratulations on your wife’s pregnancy!

There are many orders based on the Third Order that St. Francis founded 800 years ago. Many are of priests, brothers, and nuns; a few are lay, including the Secular Franciscan Order.

The SFO has about 1.5 million members worldwide.

Hi,

How do you find a group in your area? I’ve tried emailing the “official” website twice with no response.

Not sure where you got the email address that you sent your request to. If you look on the main page you will see a link to “Regional Fraternities”. Find the region that would cover where you live and then send an email or call the person associated with that region. Some of the individual fraternities have their own email address listed on that page also.

Hmmm…maybe it wasn’t the official site. Just googled regional fraternities secular franciscans and found another site.

No regional fraternities in my area though. 😦

Try contacting the person in charge of the area of the country you live in and see if there is one close to you. Make sure you are on this page.

I know the one that I attended a few meetings of wasn’t listed. Unless they used the largest major city (Baltimore) as an address instead of real city name. I can’t remember what the fraternity name was, but I do remember where they meet.
