Way Back When by Grizfolk (featured in Mr. Peabody and Sherman)

(these lyrics are commonly written incorrectly so I went to the source: grizfolk.com/lyrics/)

Also great song from a parent to a child:
Memories will fade
If you wanna leave I’ll let you go
I’ll guide you on your way
I’ll be there for you, don’t you know
It’s a promise that I made,
Never be afraid
I know you’ll be okay,
This love we have we can’t outgrow
You’re on your own
You’re not alone
I know I’ll see you again
If all good things
Come to an end
Well always have way back when

Cheerleader by OMI

(cover by Pentatonix )

(regarding the Blessed Mother)
When I need motivation
My one solution is my queen
'Cause she stays strong
Yeah, yeah
She is always in my corner
Right there when I want her
All these other girls are tempting
But I’m empty when you’re gone…
Oh, I think that I’ve found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her

I see the point the OP was making, I often listen to songs and think they are talking about God, like Black and Gold by Sam Sparro, We are black, God is the Gold. I particularly like the lines, 'If you’re not really here, I dont want to be either. I want to be next to you…"

“Black And Gold”

Mmm
If the fish swam out of the ocean
And grew legs and they started walking
And the apes climbed down from the trees
And grew tall and they started talking
And the stars fell out of the sky
And my tears rolled into the ocean
And now I’m looking for a reason why
You even set my world into motion

'Cause if you’re not really here
Then the stars don’t even matter
Now I’m filled to the top with fear
That it’s all just a bunch of matter
'Cause if you’re not really there
Then I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold

Mmm

I look up into the night sky
I see a thousand eyes staring back
And all around these golden beacons
I see nothing but black
I feel the weight of something beyond them
I don’t see what I can feel
If vision is the only validation
Then most of my life isn’t real

'Cause if you’re not really here
Then the stars don’t even matter
Now I’m filled to the top with fear
That it’s all just a bunch of matter
'Cause if you’re not really there
Then I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold
(Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold, black and gold, black and gold)

Mmm
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold
Oh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

'Cause if you’re not really here
Then the stars don’t even matter
Now I’m filled to the top with fear
That it’s all just a bunch of matter
'Cause if you’re not really there
I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be, next to you
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold

People say I’m crazy and that I am blind
Risking it all in a glance…
Don’t care what is written in your history
As long as you’re here with me…
Every little thing that you have said and done
Feels like it’s deep within me
Doesn’t really matter if you’re on the run
It seems like we’re meant to be…
I don’t care who you are
Where you’re from
What you did
As long as you love me
  • As Long as You Love Me - Backstreet Boys

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see
I don’t know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all
  • Chasing Cars, Snow Patrol

Saw the wandrin’ eye inside my heart
Shouts and battle cries from every part
I can see those tears, every one is true
When the door appears, I’ll go right through
I stand in liquid light like everyone
I built my life with rhymes to carry on
And it gives me hope, to see you there
The things I used to know, that one fine
One fine day
One fine day
In a small dark room where I will wait
Face to face I find, I contemplate
Even though a man is made of clay
Everything can change that one fine
One fine day
One fine day
One fine day
Then before my eyes is standing still
I beheld it there, a city on a hill
I complete my tasks one by one
I remove my masks when I am done
Then a piece of mind fell over me
In these troubled times, I still can see
We can use the stars to guide the way
It is not that far, the one fine
One fine day
One fine day
One fine day
One fine day
David Byrne and Brian Eno- One Fine Day
This one makes me think of the process of finally coming to accept Heaven while in Purgatory. Be wary of some of these guys’ other work.

It seems that I remember
I dreamed a thousand dreams
We’d face the days together
No matter what they’d bring
A strength inside like I’d never known
Opened the door to life and let it go
This sun may shine forever
Upon the back of love
A kingdom raised from ashes
And held within your arms
And should the rain break through the trees?
We’ll find a shelter there and never leave
I’ll run to you
Nothing stands between us now
Nothing I can lose
This light inside can never die
**Another world just made for two
I’ll swim the seas inside with you
And like the waves without a sound
I’ll never let you down
**
Upon a wave of summer
A hilltop paved with gold
We shut our eyes and made
The promises we hold
A will to guide and see us through
I’d do it all again because of you
I’ll run to you
Nothing stands between us now
Nothing I can lose
This light inside can never die
Another world just made for two
I’ll swim the seas inside with you
And like the waves without a sound
I’ll never let you down
I’d tear my very soul to make you mine
David Sylvian- Wave
This one should be fairly self-explanatory.

I don’t know if it counts as secular, but Jesus by Queen. Pretty self-explanatory really. Then again it’s not so much as for Jesus as about Jesus.

Along this theme. . . My sister is a Dominican Sister of St. Cecilia.

She told me that she loves to sing KT Tunstall’s “Universe and U” to Jesus, and Jesus sings it back to her. So I made a video of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia with that theme as a present for her, and I also uploaded it to youtube.

youtube.com/watch?v=ZRUTPArPzL0

"When I’m cold inside
You are warm and bright
You know You are so good for me,

With your child’s eyes
You are more than You seem
You see into space

I see in your face
the places you’ve been
the things you have learned
they sit with you so beautifully

You know there’s no need to hide away
You know I tell the truth
We are just the same

And I can feel everything you do
Hear everything you say
even when you’re miles away

'Cause I am Me, the universe and you. . ."

etc.

KT Tunstall has a good number of songs that I like to mentally apply to Jesus.

Selena Gomez has a song called Nobody:

No heart, no hands, no skin, no touch
Can get me there, nowhere enough
To love me like you do, to love me like you do
No kiss, no lips, no feel, no rush
Can keep me high, I swear no one
Can love me like you do, can love me like you do, oh

Nobody’s gonna love me like you
Nobody, uh
Nobody, no uh
Nobody’s gonna love me like you do
Like you, ooh
Nobody’s gonna love me like you
Nobody, uh
Nobody, no uh
Nobody’s ever loved me to the truth
Like you, ooh

Nobody’s gonna love me like you
Nobody, nobody ooh

No oxygen, could barely breathe
My darkest sin, you’ve raised release
And it’s all because of you, all because of you
I don’t know what it is, but you’ve pulled me in
No one compares, could ever begin…

…and so on. I thought it was about a boy, but she said on Twitter a while back that it was about God. She also sang this song along with a song from hillsong at one point in her concerts.

Secular i guess, since she’s a pop singer

**Sunny (1966) by Bobby Hebb **

Bobby Hebb stated that the song is about his brother who was murdered and the song was written within 48 hours after his brother was killed but someone in a comment on YouTube claims they read an interview with Bobby Hebb and Mr. Hebb said that Sunny is the Son of God and he is singing praise to Christ.

The YouTube Commenter didn’t say where they read the interview; I tried to finding the interview online but couldn’t find anything:
Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain
The dark days are gone, and the bright days are here
My Sunny one shines so sincere
Sunny one so true, I love you
Sunny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet
Sunny, thank you for the love you brought my way
You gave to me your all and all
Now I feel ten feet tall
Sunny one so true, I love you
Sunny, thank you for the truth you let me see
Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to Z
My life was torn like a wind-blown sand
And the rock was formed when you held my hand
Sunny one so true, I love you
Sunny, thank you for the smile upon your face
Sunny, thank you for the gleam that shows its grace
You’re my spark of nature’s fire
You’re my sweet complete desire
Sunny one so true, I love you
Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain
Now the dark days are gone, and the bright days are here
My Sunny one shines so sincere
Sunny one so true, I love you…I love You…
I also want to mention A Love Supreme by John Coltrane and Duke Ellington’s three Concerts of Sacred Music from the Jazz World although those works are intended to be spiritual music.

This song makes me think of Jesus calling a lost sheep back to confession and the Church.

Hideaway by Berlin

Cool and so breezy
Take it or leave it
Keeping your distance
Arrows to your heart just bounce away
I see you bleeding
Your sad eyes are pleading
The poison is spreading
So cleanse yourself with tears of salvation
Forget the pain
Hideaway in my arms
Where’s the shame
Cry away there’s no harm
Lost in a nightmare
Falling through thin air
Faster and faster
Love is getting closer and closer
It’s time that you wake up
From haircuts and make up
No need to be frightened
Trust in the love that you dream of
You’ll be my hero
Start back at zero
Throw off your mask
Freedom at last
Trust in a needed friend

Songwriters: CHAS SANDFORD, JOHN CRAWFORD

“Won’t you look down upon me, Jesus, You’ve got to help me make a stand.
You’ve just got to see me through another day.
My body’s aching and my time is at hand and I won’t make it any other way.
Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain…”
  • James Taylor

All those lyrics seem to be about love.

If you equate God with love, then you can perceive them that way.
But even then we might want to subdivide those into two categories, depending whether the artist equates God with love.

From the musical ‘Wicked,’ the song ‘For Good.’ 😃
I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today
Because I knew you…
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You’ll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend…
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
Because I knew you
I have been changed for good
And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I’ve done, you blame me for
But then, I guess we know
There’s blame to share
And none of it seems to matter anymore
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes the sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In the wood (Harmony over Glinda)
Who can say if I’ve been
Changed for the better?
I do believe I have been
Changed for the better
And because I knew you…
Because I knew you…
Because I knew you…
I have been changed for good…

I know you haven’t made your mind up yet,
But I would never do you wrong.
I’ve known it from the moment that we met,
No doubt in my mind where you belong.
I’d go hungry; I’d go black and blue,
And I’d go crawling down the avenue.
No, there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love.
  • Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan
I like the Garth Brooks version!

None of those songs are in any way about God. They are all about sex, lust etc. The video to wrecking ball with miley swinging naked is bad enough. If anything they are sinful songs and trying to lead the youth into sinful lifestyles. Just yesterday another of mileys songs came on the radio “we can’t stop” there is a line in that song goes something like-
It’s our party we can do what we want
It’s our party we can say what we want
It’s our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can see who we want
Just sumes up the hold celebs have on young people
