Interregnum has begun.

We are without the Rock.

The ring is being destroyed and the apartments in the Palace are being sealed.
 
I poured a glass of fine Italian wine while I watched the doors close and gave a toast to a very holy man.

This is correct. Which makes me wonder…what happens to it now? Does Benedict XVI keep it? Does it go to a museum? Does the Vatican keep it until he passes on and bury it with him?

Meh, different sources say different things, seems a translation thing to me.
 
So, we go back to having the “Pope-sized hole” in our liturgy starting tomorrow then…
 
When they speak of “destroying the ring” it really means destroying the seal. The Chair is Vacant and the Seal must be destroyed that it can never be used again. The gold (or platinum or whatever) is of no consequence, and anyway, they couldn’t “destroy” the metal without actually melting it down on the spot. I’ve never heard of that being done and I highly doubt they have a handy-dandy crucible in the closet.

Tradition, I believe, is to smash it with the silver hammer they used to tap the Pope on the head with to confirm he was dead.

No, it has been established that the Ring of the Fisherman will be destroyed along with the seal.

Interesting. I’ve never encountered these traditions before. When a new pope is selected, I presume he will be given a new ring?
 
(As a side note — I did have to giggle a small bit when I realized that CAF now has to allow discussion about Sede Vacantists, because we are all that now!! 😉 — perhaps not all in the same sense, but you get my drift.)
