oh is that what is on the ring? I always thought it was his coat of arms.

By destroying the seal which, as I said earlier, is the only thing that makes a difference, the “Ring of the Fisherman” is effectively destroyed. If they want to melt the gold later, fine. Hitting it with a silver hammer (or a rock or sledge hammer) will **not **destroy the gold. It never has. OTOH, it will (and does) destroy the seal.
 
It’s a very sad time. Pope Benedict was a fine pope; God bless him.
 
Yes, it is a sobering time, but also a very interesting one to me. Last time there was a conclave to elect a new pope I was not a Catholic, my daughter was seriously dating a Catholic and just starting on her journey to convert, I followed her a few years later (he claims us both as his converts, she says I’m hers 😉 ) So last time I was an interested observer, from another religious persuasion, with strong Catholic leanings, although that is another story; this time I’ve committed to praying for two of the Cardinals involved in the Conclave.

Then what is the term for sede vacante Catholics who do not believe that the gates of hell have prevailed over the Church for 60 years 🙂
