I keep bumping into people on here who have their religion listed as “Catholic” but who turn out to believe that the current popes are either anti-popes, or that the pope are in error. Should these people be allowed to list their religion as “Catholic”?

I think if people don’t recognize the teaching authority of Benedict XVI, they should have to indicate so in their profiles to make that more clear.

I identify them by the content of their posts,…I pay no attention at all to what they’ve written in that little profile box.

I try not to judge a book by it’s cover.🙂

Interesting question. If I murder someone, I am still a citizen, but not in “good standing”.

So, if a Catholic seperates themself, are they still a Catholic, but not in “good standing” ?

I think the real underlying question is whether or not they are truly schismatic. If they are schismatic, then they are technically not Catholics, but I’m not sure they can really be classified as schismatic in the strict sense of the word.

They do not deny the authority of the papacy; they deny that a particular person occupies that office. This is based upon a misunderstanding of the office and a number of other facts, but not a deliberate desire to sever ties with the papacy.

I would consider them Catholics, as we ought to give them the benefit of the doubt unless and until the Church makes a declaration to the contrary at some point. That is not to say we should accept their errors, but that we should avoid judging them guilty of a particular sin without the declaration from the proper authority.

I voted “no”. If they deny the Pope and the Magisterium, they have placed themselves outside the Church.

But then again, I can call myself a “beauty queen”, but that doesn’t make me one:D

I thought once you were baptized a Catholic, you were always a Catholic unless the Church overtly excommunicated you.
What does the Catechism say?

I’ve previously told that my ex-husband was baptized Catholic because it was the closest church to where his parents lived. He didn’t go to a Catholic Church during his childhood or after he became an adult until we were married. I had talked to a priest about it and was told that since he was baptized in a Catholic Church, he was Catholic, even though he had nothing more to do with the church.

The answers to these and a multitude of other questions are all dependant on one thing; your definitions of the two words “catholic” and “Catholic”.

Surely people who have converted to Baptist or Mormon shouldn’t come here and label themselves Catholic, wouldn’t you agree? Even if they haven’t been formally excommunicated.

If someone’s purpose here is to argue that the Pope is misleading us, then I think they should not be labelled Catholic. They could call themselves something similar, like Sedevacantist Catholic, or Dissenting Catholic. I bring this up because they like to pretend they are just normal catholics when they discuss issues, and they try to hide their beliefs which wastes people’s time. It is intentionally misleading people in order to trick us into wasting our time reading their posts.
