Hi there,
Take a good look:
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation (2 Peter 1:20)
Not trying to sound condemning or anything but this is the truth…you cannot interpret on your own

But then again, one may interpret THAT wrong

Hi Paris
This is a nice try, but it’s a swing and a miss. First of all in looking at the scripture you have posted, we must look at the key word you are pointing to, and that word is “Prophecy”. You have interpreted this word wrongly.

proph·e·cy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prf-s)
n. pl. proph·e·cies (-sz)

1 An inspired utterance of a prophet, viewed as a revelation of divine will.
2 A prediction of the future, made under divine inspiration.
Such an inspired message or prediction transmitted orally or in writing.
3 The vocation or condition of a prophet.
4 A prediction.

Now I agree that there are people who interpret things in the scripture’s differently and your post proves that very point.
In Him and Only Him.

See, I had a feeling this would happen.unity.enya.com/images/smiles/smiles_rolleyes.gif

I love it when people who protest against the REAL CHURCH say that oh, the CC is just as bad, how lovely.[

NonDenom, sounds like you think you think you got it right. Why do you always try to prove the Church wrong?

I would suppose the same reason people try to prove it right…don’t you think?

Don’t you guys realize that you ARE part of the CC (with a small “c” that is)??? You’re obviously TRYING to interpret on your own thinking you’re so right. Oh well. Be decieved

I CAN’T interpret on my own…that’s why I’m in the CC.

Paris,

Remember that the gate is narrow and picking up the cross is not easy. Be thankful that you have seen the light and have come into the true church. Glory be to God!

Hi Paris. St Ignatius was a disciple of St John the Apostle. So I think you are much better off reading his words rather than Brian or nondenom.** :)**

ST IGNATIUS TO THE SMYRNAEANS

You must all follow the lead of the bishop, as Jesus Christ followed that of the Father; follow the presbytery as you would the Apostles; reverence the deacons as you would God’s commandment. Let no one do anything touching the Church, apart from the bishop. Let that celebration of the Eucharist be considered valid which is held under the bishop or anyone to whom he has committed it. Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not permitted without authorization from the bishop either to baptize or to hold an agape; but whatever he approves is also pleasing to God. Thus everything you do will be proof against danger, and valid.

Hi Paris

I’m not protesting the “Real Church” for the real church is Christ’s church and I’m glad to be part of his church. Your just upset because I proved your interpretation wrong, at least thats the way that I interpret it.

Can you please describe Christ’s church. I am very interested in hearing what his church looks like and how one would find it. Thank you!

Not quite. The Church has a system to prove to itself what it believes - it is not interested so much in making an apologia to others. It is a process to clarify and come to an ever greater understanding of revealed truth. We believe that all things posited for belief must come from the apostles. Anthing extrinsic to the apostolic faith is constantly rooted out by attempting to prove a doctrine true or not.

I would say the CAtholic church has a system that has defined itself so that it CANNOT be wrong…(even when it is).
Before anyone jumps on this point, think about it, isn’t this what you think…except for my opinion I added in there…

Yes. However, it can be demostrated to be an apostolic mandate. Again, even the Church’s understanding of itself must not be contrary to reason or revelation. We completely reject fideism in any sense.

This discussion is important!

Paris has brought up a Scripture (2 Pet 1:20) to support traditional Christianity’s understanding of how one is to approach and interptret Scriptural text. However, I think, too that BH and non-denom have made good points which we as Catholics employ in our own apologetics. In proper exegesis and interpretation we must always consider the seamless garmet of God’s Word. We must not be tempted to pluck out a verse from the Word and expect that one verse to make our case.

The discussion shouldn’t be whether or not 2 Pet. alone contains sufficient proof. Rather, the Church’s traditional view of Scripture is much more robust and comprehensive. There are, in fact, only a handful of Scriptures which the Church has authoritatively “interpreted” in defense of what St. Paul would call “the sound doctrines of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching proper to true religion” (1 Tim. 6:3).

The ultimate question, then, becomes: Do we have a Scriptural model or any indication from historical Christianity that each individual (excluding certain private revelations, ie St. Paul) has in his or her power the ability to understand or “interpret” Scripture without regard to the common judgement of the Church’s authority?

I think this discussion could be very fruitful if we would put aside our Scriptural sword drills and focus on the WHOLE truth of what God has revealed to us through his Word.

Don’t forget Acts passage: Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31
He replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him. 32

Hi Paris. . .You have brought up another very good Scripture that is certainly useful in understanding the Church’s comprehensive teaching on Scriptural interpretation. We have teachers because we need them. We have the Church because Christ, our Lord, in his infinite wisdom knew that we needed it, too! Yet, we must always keep in mind that, as Catholics, we are not bound to proof-text our theology. . .that was my point.

Hi
You might first want to try reading all four Gospels and then Acts and Corinthians to get a great idea of what Christ’s church looks like and where to find it. When one is searching for answers, you can never go wrong by looking into God’s word. Thank you!
