I wish mijac had put his considerable effort into creating modules for the free, open source JSword Project instead of eSword. eSword is a proprietary Windows-only program, while the JSword project has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It would reach a larger audience. eSword charges for some modules, but this is not their fault. It is due to so many newer resources being under copyright and the need to pay the publisher for the right to distribute an e-version. crosswire.org/jsword/index.html

I myself use Accordance, a Mac Bible study application. I bought the Catholic Collection, Advanced, that they offer. It is sadly lacking in a good Catholic commentary. I have not paid to “unlock” the Catholic Study Bible which is supposed to offer commentary. accordancebible.com/products/packages/catholic_collection.php

Logos/Libronix has a PC version, and a Mac version is almost ready for release. They do not offer a Catholic collection, and the default purchase includes a lot of Protestant content. A third party does offer what seems to be a nice Catholic set including Libronix, but nowhere are the full contents listed, and it’s almost $500. bibletheology.com/p-103-new-logos-bible-study-software-for-catholics-exclusive-to-our-store.aspx

Collegeville offers a nice set of collections including their commentary for $30 to $170, depending on content. It works with the Libronix system, too. litpress.org/Subjects.aspx?ID=16

Thank you for a brilliant summary of Bible resources on the web.

I use BibleWorks 7 and Logos (Libronix Digital Library System).

I am still having problems with eSword. I gave it sime time, but it is not working fully, in spite of the help I got here.

In my Logos I have the Collegeville Catholic Reference Library which is useful.
Thanks to all.

I am interested; can you tell me how the Haydock commentary is superior to the Challoner? My DR that came with Accordance is uncommented and I will be buying a dead tree or Kindle version of the DR that is commented quite soon. If there is a good reason to choose one over the other I’d like to know!

I wouldn’t say that it is superior to Challoner, but since you are looking for a Catholic Bible commentary, this is the one you want. Since you are not a fan of the RSV-CE like me, I would stay away from the Navarre Bible Series as it is RSV-CE based.

I recently bought this book, A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture, which I have found very useful. The commentary is based on the Douay Rheims Bible. Check it out on Amazon, ISBN is 0895557576. The blurb on the back of the book reads:
This book is a geat introductory Bible study all by itself - for it brings out the Catholic teachings that are hidden in Sacred Scripture! A famous book - one which received recommendations from 14 bishops when first published and which went through at least 16 editions - this commentary is not a work for scholars, but rather a very practical book for the “ordinary” Catholic. It hands on to new generations the classic Scriptural teachings on faith and morals - from both the Old Testament and New Testament - in a manner that is easy to understand.
A typical chapter will first tell the bible story, based on the Douay Rheims Bible, with many fascinating explanations of particular words and phrases. Then follow many brief explanations of topics in the Scripture passage, showing clearly the Catholic doctrines that are contained there. These include teachings on the Catholic Church, the Mass, the Sacraments - especially the Holy Eucharist - Sanctifying Grace, intercessory prayer, Mortal Sin and Venial Sin, Forgiveness, the Will of God, Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and much more. Finally, a brief “application” to daily life is given in each chapter.
Among other things, this extremely valuable book shows that the early Church was the Catholic Church and that the Bible is a Catholic book.

Just so you know I have worked or operated both programs. e-Sword is far superior in its capabilities than is project sword. I supose that is one of the biggest reasons for my work in esword. I do not at present have a clue as to how to create modules for project sword. There have been utilities created to help people create modules for e-sword. e-sword has I believe over 7 million downloads which far surpases sword project, as far as people using the program. e-sword does have a net work and email group which provides support for users in tools, and getting questions answered and help. Just so you know based on what I have heard from the yahoo esword group via email, there are a number of esword users who operate esword using
Linux and operating esword, from what I have read there is a free program donot remember the name that can be added that makes window programs compatible with Linux, the computer experts know more about this then I do…

e-sword allows for versification, so as Bible verses quoted in commentaries, dictionaries when the pointer is over the verse it puts up a hoover box with the entire Bible quote for the open Bible, has a hoover box for strong numbers, clicking on strongs numbers in a given Bible text will automatically pull up the given dictionary definition which is opened. There are far more resourses available for e-sword.

These are reasons ultimately caused me to use e-sword for creating Catholic resources. I do the best I can

There have been some problems with the “BIBLE AND COMMENTARIES.CHM” Working after download. I have found that the file seems to have been damaged by the upload or download or both. I have zipped the file and re uploadd the file back on the site as a zipped file. You will have to extract the file once downloaded. seems to work fine after that. In any case
John tells me “any case this is a fantastic resource. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

For Mac Users, I have found a site that may be of help in making esword available for Mac users

davidcox.com.mx/eswordmodules/Esword_MAC.htmdavidcox.com.mx/eswordmodules/Esword_MAC.htm

David Cox’s E-Sword on the MAC (Apple MacIntosh)
Overview and Clarification statement

First of all let me say that I am a PC guy, and I don’t even own a MAC, so take all of this accordingly.

I have received an email from James Wiggins about his website which uses an interface program so that you can run e-Sword on the MAC.

Please go to his site whatisrazar.com/macesword/ to see further details.
How this is possible

I am not a programmer either, but I will give you the basics of how the technology works. This is similar to what Linux uses to run PC programs which is called WINE. (There is nothing alcoholic about this.) WINE is a layer or a program between the operating system and the program. In the case of this program, James Wiggins has made such a program which layers itself between the PC program and the MAC operating system so that the two can work together on a MAC. Give me feed back on this

If you are a MAC user and want to try this, please send me an email at tech and then the @ sign, and then davidcox.com.mx. I am interesting in hearing your comments.

What is e-Sword?
e-Sword is a fantastic electronic Bible study program that includes many translations of the Bible, commentaries, dictionaries, and more that was developed to run on Microsoft Windows. Check out the e-Sword website for further details.

I want to run it on my Mac!
Me too! So, I’ve created a package that combines a free, open-source project called Darwine (v0.9.57) and e-Sword (v7.9.8)…](/)](http://www.whatisrazar.com/macesword)

I have just added the following to the Catholic esword Bible and Catechetical study software program.
This has been added for those who have trouble running esword

1909CatholicDictionary&Catechism.zip
**1909 new Catholic Dictionary and Roman Catholic Catechism as a CHM file, compiled HTM linked file **for those who have trouble navagating e-Sword. One of the Most thorough and concise Catholic Dictionaries ever produced…1910 version of the New Catholic Dictionary online. The Dictionary has thousands of short articles that clearly, simply explain aspects of Catholic life and influence. Many of the topics concern day to day things, practices and terms that are passing into obscurity, but deserve

On the above site is a portion that has been translated of “The Great Cornelius Lapide Commentar” from Latin to English the gospels, Corinthians 1 and 2, Galatians.

What is available is the best Catholic Commentary I have ever come accross, far surpases the Navarre commentary. The Lapide was originally written in Latin in the 1600’s. It would be great to find someone fluent in Latin who might consider translating the rest of the Lapide NT or the whole works into English so as to make the NT or whole commentary available for e-Sword program.

Biblia Cerus

This program offers Sacred Scripture, its interpretation in light of Sacred Tradition and the teachings of the Magisterium, with appropriate theological commentary and exegesis.
The downloadable version allows you to connect Sacred Scripture to the complete works of many Doctors of the Church, Councils, Encyclicals, teachings of the Popes, Catechisms, as well as commentaries from secular literature, etc.
