Below are the arguments of an engineer who is calling for population control.
i dont see the logic why so many people see the overpopulation problem. they argue that their is no overpopulation because vast lands are still uninhabited. as an Engineer, overpopulation is when there are more people than that can be comfortably supported. overpopulation happens due to the shortage of food, water, shelter, jobs, medical care, police protection… its not about the number of people or land area alone… it is about the capacities of places to support life in comfort.
overpopulation also destroys our environment… let say we move people to this uninhabited lands… there is basically no supply of fuel to cook food. then they would be forced to chop wood to cook… if the population grows, more wood needs to be chopped…
we also have to consider health and sanitation… health services and sewage/drainage systems can only support a fixed amount of people at one time… rapid growth of people taxes the capacity of our waste disposal systems… a landfill with a serviceable period of 20years can be full by just 7-11 years…
lets face it… philippines is in dire situations. it really has little in terms of money… (lets put aside the corruption issue). we need to take care of what we have right now…
theres also the problem of water shortage… as an engineer, i know there are lots of people consuming unclean water… we are depleting our aquifers… there are even places without access to potable water… (most deep wells arent really suitable for drinking)
there is a big difference between overcrowding and overpopulation… what the church is referring to is simply overcrowding… not the overpopulation problem…
why on earth should we listen about raising families to those who dont have biological offsprings of their own (declared)… if some of them have, its not like they are the ones actively raising them… why on earth should we listen about sex from those who are avoiding it… its like asking a blind man wat a color is…
we need to stop the population time bomb
im no polsci or liberal arts major. i say what is reflected by numbers… and what can be seen…
1.) all machines have maximum effeciency and in one moment in time will eventually cease to function, there is also wastage. there is no such thing as zero wastage and perfect effeciency… what you may be referring to is over-harvesting. yes you could do that. but it will strain the resource so much that it depletes faster that in could regenerate (ex. aquifers and forests), you are denying future generations that resource…
2.) it is true that with wealth, there is better goods, space, services, etc… it is merely a result of resource planning and utilization by these people or by generations before them. on the other hand, poverty is the result of lack of resource planning and huge wastage… (if your born poor, you can blame your parents for that)
3.) there is really an imbalance in the distribution of wealth… most of govt. programs are directed to benifit the poor. (i have no probs with that… thats good)
4.) there is a lack of technical jobs in many parts of the country. (its hard to get a capable carpenter in the provinces). human capital is not fully utilised. another example would be the huge surplus of nurses… manpower is really vital to economic progress, if it is qualified enough and in the right industries…
thats my arguments against yours with regards to realisim as my profession dictates.
as for my experience and some questions…
ive worked in construction and related fields and i know many of these laborers earn minimum income yet they have families of more than 3 children… it cannot be denied that having more children requires more resources to support… ive known many rich people and they prefer to have small families… i know that somewhere there is a problems… i have theories but im not qualified to discuss it in a scientific manner…
as for my political views on this and personal comment on your post:
each man to his own labor. it would be unfair to small families if larger families are given more priviledges… there would be unfair distribution of wealth… i believe in the free market where each man sows what he reaps… it is immoral to put the burden of your actions to somebody else…
What is the best way to refute these argumentations?there are hardworking people and there are lazy people… it would be injustice to reward them equally
