I’m planning a trip to San Antonio soon and would like some recommendations for good Catholic book and gift stores. I’ve been to the Pauline one on the Main Plaza, opposite from San Fernando Cathedral, and also the shop at the Little Flower Basilica.

Any others I should check out?

Christ the King Book Store, it is on Wurzback, between Huebner and I-10.

How about Catholic Answers? or Saint Joseph Communications? Saint Ignatius Press? They all have great online stores.

In this particular case I’m looking not for online sources–which are numerous–but stores I can physically visit while I’m in San Antonio, where I can thumb through stuff before buying.

I think the Cathedral has a shop too, but it was closed when I last went by there.

I’m definitely putting Christ the King on my to-do list, even though it’s further out of central SA than I’d planned to go. I see it stocks Catholic magazines, and I’d love to look those over.

My local Catholic bookstore doesn’t really stock magazines. They say they don’t know which ones to carry. They don’t want to get liberal ones and anger the conservative shoppers or conservative ones and anger the liberal shoppers, so they have nothing. They also said they don’t want to carry any titles that won’t sell, so they’d be stuck with unpopular, dated merchandise sitting on the shelves.

I’m also looking for shops that carry old religious prints–or old-looking ones–such as those from Cromo in Italy.

Well, I’m either going Wednesday or Thursday—any other bookstores I’m missing? Do you know any antique stores in SA with religious antiques, like old holy cards and so forth?

Thanks.

Wow, Adonis–you weren’t kidding! Christ the King was the best Catholic bookstore I’ve ever been to. Amazing stock! I got so much stuff I skipped the other places n my list–I’ll hit them another time. Unbelievable. And I hear their other store on the highway to Austin is even bigger.

Very good call. Well worth the trip! I mean–they even stock Douay-Rheims and Vulgate Bibles!

Christ the king is a great store. An the cool thing is i only live 3 blocks away.😃

If your looking for large religious antiques, the broadway mall next to the airport convention center has a bunch of stuff.

I’m I didn’t see your note sooner.

I agree that Christ the King is a wonderful orthodox book store.

I shop at this store all the time. The owners are also willing to order items they do not have in stock.

While I don’t know of a place that carries antique Catholic items, I shop for gifts at Bonnie’s Boutique on Blanco just south of Loop 410 (North Side). This shop carries a lot of items not found elsewhere, and the owner is also willing to special order.

By “large” do you mean like pulpits and confessionals? I’m looking more for old pictures and statues and such.

I may ago again as soon as this week. Is that antique mall a few blocks west of the Alamo any good?
