In confession, my priest asked me to read the Book of Tobit and pray for the intercession of saints to help me find a good job with good people. I have been despairing, frustrated and angry to find myself, time and again, working for nasty and dishonest people. Last week I asked my boss to stop mistreating me and was fired by our board three days later. I am in desperate financial straights. I do have a problem with concentration due to an autoimmune disease and worry about supporting myself.

I cannot remember my priest’s suggested prayer for help, and am not sure I understand how my situation relates to Tobit.

Can anyone weigh in on what our faith teaches that I might apply to my situation. I am seeking a better path and to be a better person but feel defeated.

Saint Joseph is patron of workers, ask him for his prayers and help.Pray rosary, its the powerful weapon.I cant clearly understand your full story, but Prayers with honest heart Will Always make our Lord Listen.Talk to Him

Thank you. Unfortunately I do not think my situation is unusual today. I believe many people suffer in bad work environments and have read that it is the primary reason people leave jobs. We in the U.S. think labor laws protect us, but not well. For example, my office had less that 15 employees so most laws do not apply. HR is there to protect management…employees are expendable. I feel this is just an extension of a general loss of faith and disrespect for morals and values in society. If we are not accountable to God, well, then whatever one gets away with is thought to be golden I the work place and the scum rises and settles at the top.

I wish to live my life simply, including work…seek virtue and goodness and all that flows from Christ, and avoid sin, evil and all that derives from Satan. I keep finding myself among evil, or at least unfaithful and immoral people and it breaks my heart. There seems no way to tell who they are in a job search.

I will take your suggestion and thank you for it.

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless, and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible,
look kindly upon us, and increase your mercy in us,
that in difficult moments, we might not despair nor become despondent,
but with great confidence, submit ourselves to your holy will,
which is love and Mercy itself.
Amen.

am not sure I understand how my situation relates to Tobit.
Tobit lost his sight, and Sarah lost all seven of her husbands before she ever even had a chance to become a married woman. Life seemed pretty hopeless at that particular moment in time. Depression and suffering are not a permanent condition in life. Sarah’s choice, even though she had lost all hope, was to reach out to God in prayer. Tobit actually prayed and asked God to let him die. But God had something better planned for him than death. God’s will was done in both cases and that was a more excellent gift than either could have possibly imagined at the time they prayed.
