Please pray for me. I am very self-centered and I haven’t been able to change my whole life. I am worried that I will live and die alone. I have had a pretty lonely life. Thank God I have a parent and some other relatives, and a couple of friends, but my relationships with them are somewhat at arm’s length (with my mom it is finally getting deeper though). There is no pain like loneliness. I will pray for all of you. Thank you.

I have spent the last year alone and there is nothing worse.
I will pray for you.

You two, Rolypoly and Dan, my love and prayers.

Rolypoly I don’t doubt that there are long-hidden reasons why you’d have trust and intimacy issues so don’t be too hard on yourself.
Just start today, in a little way, a pleasant word to a store assistant, a smile for someone. It can mean more than you think.

The following poem “But” was written by a Divine Word Missionary, inspiring us to love of others, even in the smallest gestures of human kindness.
It was only a sunny smile,
And little it cost in the giving;
But it scattered the night
Like morning light,
And made the day worth living.
Through life’s dark warp a woof it wove
In shining colours of hope and love;
And the angels smiled as they watched above,
Yet little it cost in the giving.

**
It was only a kindly word, a word that was lightly spoken;
But not in vain,
For it stilled the pain
Of a heart that was nearly broken
It strengthened a faith beset with fears,
And groping blindly through mists of tears,
For light to brighten the coming years,
Although it was lightly spoken.

It was only a helping hand
And it seemed of little availing;
But its clasp was warm,
And it saved from harm
A brother whose strength was failing.
Its touch was tender as angels’ wings
But it rolled the stone from the hidden springs
And pointed the way to higher things,
Though it seemed of little availing.

Your self admission is very profound and the first step towards the humility you need to change your whole life and begin to center it on CHRIST and not yourself. You cannot serve two masters - you and JESUS.

I would suggest you begin to volunteer at a food kitchen that serves the poor. Clean tables, serve food, wash the floor, the dishes, the pots. Come early stay late, return often,

Volunteer at a retirment home and clean up after the elderly, who cleaned up after the young.

Vounteer at a V.A. hospital and help those who have sacrificed their bodies for your freedom.

Just move your attention, thoughts, desires and efforts to others - weaker than yourself - and offer it to GOD as an offering to help you lose yourself and find HIM.

Is being self-centered the result of you being deeply wounded in the past? Do you say to yourself: God wasn’t there for me, my father wasn’t there for me, there’s no-one who will properly take care of me and defend me but me? I myself am not able to move out of my self-centeredness and open up to people. I have a burden of low self-esteem, shame, self-hate, feelings of inadequacy and inferiority, social awkwardness, and deep, deep loneliness that I’ve carried most of my life. I too sometimes fear Hell is awaiting me after an existence that’s more a chore than life as an exhilirating adventure. which deepens my misery. At around 12, I was with a bunch of kids from my neighbourhood, we were playing, then one started singing a goofy song, which made everybody laugh. I was the last one to catch on. The lyrics were a play of words with my name and someone with down syndrome (I had repeated a year in elementary school, and I already felt inferior and stupid). What that did to me I have no words to describe. Know that you’re not alone experiencing this life as a “valley of tears”. Hug from someone who understands.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women and
blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Praying that you pray a lot and deepen your relationship with the Lord. He knows your pain and wants you to draw closer to Him, grow stronger, and heal. May you start attending Mass and adoration daily, if this is possible, and be sure to serve God by praying for others and by doing good acts of mercy towards them. You are in my prayers.

Thanks to everyone on the prayer intentions forum and on this thread in particular. I really believe that the prayer intentions posters are among the most compassionate and loving people on CAF and on the entire web. Thanks for all the prayers, support and advice which have helped me.

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Praying for you to give a little more and find a good friend …
